As is its wont with her, trouble follows Kris, and while proving herself a real naval officer rather than "just another Longknife," she and her crew must contend with obsolete equipment, disappearing jump-point buoys, pirates, the discovery of some spectacular alien technology, and the political intrigue that comes with the Longknife name. Shepherd's grasp of timing and intrigue remains solid, and Kris' latest challenge makes for an engaging space opera, seasoned with political machination and the thrills of mysterious ancient technology, that promises to reveal some interesting things about the future Kris inhabits. Kris Longknife: Planet Saver

With this, the fourth in the Longknife series (which now consists of seven books), Mike Shepherd really hits his stride. He's got the formula down pat. As usual, he lets you know what's incoming for Kris and the fun is figuring out how she'll deal with the threat. His characters are interesting, and his plot elements mesh smoothly.

Naturally, Kris is once again sent on some obscure mission in order to keep her in line, out of trouble, and out of the way. As before, she ends up being confronted by two tasks. In the first one, she captures a pirate ship quite easily, which leads to the discovery of some mysteriously alien tech that must, of course, not fall into the wrong hands.

Then, she is forced to defend an idependent planet, which has the sort of government that Heinlein would have approved of (whether the author himself does I leave for the individual readers to decide for themselves) against the planned take over by the Longknifes' enemy, the Peterwalds--represented in this case once again by their idiot spawn, Hank. As usual, the odds seem to be against her. Of course, since this is the fourth of seven . . . well, you know she'll prevail.

The novel goes on a bit after Kris wins out, too--and sets up the machinery for the next installments. We learn more about Abby the mysterious steamer-trunk-bearing maid, too.

It's all smooth, harmless, a fun read. It goes down easily, like an episode of one of your favorite TV dramas. And Mr. Shepherd doesn't let things get stale.

I generally like the tales in this series. They are interesting, with charming characters and fairly straightforward plots. However, this particular book is filled with errors in punctuation and grammar, so I've knocked off a star for that.

Kris Longknife, on her own and over her head, as usual

Of course Kris is never completely on her own, and there is some development of her well known cast of supporting characters in this outing. This time Kris is sent to the back of nowhere to a station command nobody wants, which naturally turns out be of enormous importance. If you like the series you'll like this one. If you haven't read any of them I'd suggest starting at the start with Mutineer. Well worth the effort even if you're not a sci fi fan.

Rare and comprehensive analysis of the authentic Kriya Yoga by a true Guru

Kriya Yoga is a sacred Yogic science that powerfully awakens a seeker's spiritual energy field and traditionally can only be revealed by a true Guru or through a designated teacher. "Kriya Yoga", by the great master, HH Paramahamsa Hariharananda is a rare gem as it describes in fine detail the science, history, tradition, and inner experience of the authentic Kriya Yoga science as taught by Lahiri Mahasaya, Swami Sriyukteshwarji, and Paramahamsa Hariharananda.

Do not be mistaken. This book does not reveal the techniques at all, but rather describes the power, the benefits, and the experiences of Kriya. Just through reading a book, you can't really practice a technique like Kriya. It contains many interesting and revealing diagrams which I have not seen anywhere else, many of which discuss how the chakras are affected by the Kriya technique.

Paramahamsa Hariharananda, who left his body in December, 2002 was a realized master and direct disciple of Swami Sriyukteshwarji, Paramahamsa Yogananda, and Swami Satyananda. He was a resident and acharya of the Karar Ashram of Swami Sriyukteshwarji for over 40 years. He is well known for having attained Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the supreme stage of yogic conciousness. He was a world teacher in both the East and West, yet remained extremely humble. He was the president of the Karar Ashram, the Kriya Yoga Institute (USA) as well as Kriya Yoga organizations in Europe.

This is a great book which describes a great deal about the benefits and power of Kriya. Don't think that you can attain realization just by reading it, one should practice a technique. Instead, it provides an excellent introduction for the novice and will prove especially interesting for those who enjoyed "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramahamsa Yogananda

An extremely solid introduction to yoga and subtle realities

I have come to appreciate that in the deep yogas of India, especially such as Kryia Yoga, exists profound and ancient knowledge about the reality of existence. This book is one of those rare treasures conveying masterful knowledge of the body and soul and their relationship to ultimate being. This book presents the principles of yoga but does not convey the practice of Kriya yoga itself which is best learned from a living teacher and they are around if you look. The writing style is very good being specific/technical but still being easy enough to follow that it does not become wonky.

Even if you have studied Yoga and metaphysics before this book has enough depth to help remind you of the wide scope of Yoga's truths. A beginner could not pick a better book for their orientation into Yoga and the deep wisdom of India.

And while you are reading this book you could do no better than listen to some of the best Yogic music around by listening to Shabda: Mantra Mysticism

It is wonderful and excellent one for me. I am grateful for Paramahamsa Hariharananda.

Must have for breastfeeding

This book has lots of great information for breastfeeding moms or anyone offering support to breastfeeding moms. I recommend if you are wanting to learn more about breastfeeding your baby then you should get this book. Dr. Newman has lots of great information in here. He recommends in a few places to watch the videos on his website. You can find those videos here: [...]

If you are thinking about what books to get about breastfeeding then this should be one of them. The other book you should get is "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by La Leche League, which is available in kindle format, and Amazon has sellers selling used copies for reasonable prices. I haven't seen any used copies of the revised edition of Dr. Newman's book available yet, but there are used copies of his first edition available. If you think you have low milk supply then I also recommend "The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk" by Diana West and Lisa Marasco. If you can only get one book then "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" should be what you get, but if you can get two then you should also get "Dr. Jack Newman's Guide to Breastfeeding: Revised Edition" as well.
