Review
''An excellent introduction to the subject, both comprehensive and up-to-date. The authors convey a clear and enthusiastic pedagogic presentation of an exciting field. As a textbook, it will be of great benefit to students, providing a valuable starting point to learn about the subject. Its presentation and style will hold the reader's attention, at the level appropriate for an introductory course. It is my preferred text of this type, as it stands out for its continued excellence over time.''
Dr. Roger Kadala, Hawaii Pacific University
"...the work of two great astronomers and top teachers... clear and concise. This is the text I would use for my introductory astronomy course"
Professor Arun Venkatachar, Ohio University
"This is an extraordinarily attractive, captivating, and easy to follow textbook of modern astronomy. I will happily continue to use it in teaching my course.''
Professor Alex Wolszczan, Penn State University
"... this is a great book as a scientific yet accessible introduction to astronomy, and likewise as a collection of interesting and beautiful figures and images which are interesting and fun to look at, even without much reading. The paper and the print are of very high quality ... It can be recommended to a broad readership with a general interest in astronomy, also as an accompanying book for related undergraduate courses."
Manuel Vogel, Contemporary Physics

An Intro Text Worthy of the Golden Age of Astronomy
By Chris
It's difficult to condense so much information into just six-hundred pages. It's even more difficult to make such a text accessible, but Pasachoff and Filippenko have done just that.
A grand mix of science and history, augmented by easy-to-understand diagrams and self-study sections, this is a remarkably complete survey of the great and most pertinent developments in modern astronomy. It's an even better guide for especially curious students, as the text provides great direction for further reading.
The first sections on the nature of science and pseudo-science should be required reading for everyone.
Absolutely recommended for students and citizen-scientists alike.

Buy it
By P. Marino
Great testbook... even the older editions are nice, but having a newer edition has different content. In some cases I liked the presentation in an older edition better (black and white vs too much color). Sometimes simple is best, as in some of the older black and white illustrations. Nevertheless, the pictures are great and the newer material is essential.

Absolutely Wonderful Astronomy Work
By Thomas C. Stifler
I bought this Book to use in conjunction with Professor Alex Filippenko's Great Courses "Understanding the Universe, An Introduction to Astronomy", It is a great teaching and reference work. I highly recommend it, as well as the lecture series for anyone interested in Astronomy!
"Understanding the Universe" consists of 96 lectures on 16 CD's. Probably the best course I have ever taken.
The book is co-authored by Prof. Filippenko, who is a wonderful lecturer and teacher!
