Irrational behavior is a part of human nature, but as MIT professor Ariely has discovered in 20 years of researching behavioral economics, people tend to behave irrationally in a predictable fashion. Drawing on psychology and economics, behavioral economics can show us why cautious people make poor decisions about sex when aroused, why patients get greater relief from a more expensive drug over its cheaper counterpart and why honest people may steal office supplies or communal food, but not money. According to Ariely, our understanding of economics, now based on the assumption of a rational subject, should, in fact, be based on our systematic, unsurprising irrationality. Ariely argues that greater understanding of previously ignored or misunderstood forces (emotions, relativity and social norms) that influence our economic behavior brings a variety of opportunities for reexamining individual motivation and consumer choice, as well as economic and educational policy. Ariely's intelligent, exuberant style and thought-provoking arguments make for a fascinating, eye-opening read. (Feb.)

Review
“This is a wonderful, eye-opening book. Deep, readable, and providing refreshing evidence that there are domains and situations in which material incentives work in unexpected ways. We humans are humans, with qualities that can be destroyed by the introduction of economic gains. A must read!”
Review
'For anyone interested in marketing - either as a practioner or victim - this is unmissable reading. If only more researchers could write like this, the world would be a better place.' Financial Times 'A marvelous book that is both thought provoking and highly entertaining, ranging from the power of placebos to the pleasures of Pepsi. Ariely unmasks the subtle but powerful tricks that our minds play on us, and shows us how we can prevent being fooled., Jerome Groopman, New York Times bestselling author of How Doctors Think 'PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL is wildly original. It shows why-much more often than we usually care to admit-humans make foolish, and sometimes disastrous, mistakes. Ariely not only gives us a great read; he also makes us much wiser., George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 2001 Koshland Professor of Economics, University of California at Berkeley

Do You Want What's Behind Curtain #1, #2 Or #3?
By Franklin the Mouse
It's an understatement to say that behavioral economics is quite controversial. Many feel that the discipline is a valid scientific field, while others believe it's bright guys pulling silly theories out of their backsides. Mr. Ariely is a smart, curious, self-deprecating guy who clearly loves analyzing how the brain works. The book is written in layman's terms so any dimwit, such as myself, can understand the author's experiments and conclusions. 'Predictably Irrational' is a mixture of personal experiences as well as how his human guinea pigs made quirky decisions. Upon reflection, many of Mr. Ariely's conclusions resembled my own life choices. That I found quite humbling.
The author covers such topics as the decoy effect; anchoring ourselves to initial prices; is our carefully constructed life simply an arbitrary coherence; the zero effect or the appeal of the word 'free;' social vs market norms of decision-making; how our emotions affect our choices; procrastination; ownership, loss and The Lake Wobegone Effect; the role expectations play; and our varying standards between being honest or dishonest.
It's very clear that there are some Amazon reviewers that were seriously pissed-off with Mr. Ariely's experiments and conclusions. Based upon their nasty reviews, I began thinking they were neocons and the author was Hillary Clinton running for president. Look, 'Predictably Irrational' is a fun, easy-to-read, informative book that will likely make you reflect on how you and others make "irrational" decisions. That's a good thing... or am I being irrational? Hell, I'm so confused. I need a beer.

It is irrational - predictably.
By JonPittsburgh67
I had high expectations about this book due to the reviews, and bought it in part due to those expectations. In the event, the book is a disjointed mishmash of statistics and experiments by the author that left me with the feeling that I had read a different book than I purchased. I must admit that there are tidbits of interesting information, but the overall impression I was left with was of a book that was written merely to sell a book, not one that was written with a compelling idea that the author wanted to share. It might be more appreciated by statisticians and those who believe statistics provide the truth of an argument; at best, this approach provides one self-serving way to see an idea, but little more. The experiments did not provide a representative sampling, in my view, and were seized upon by the author as definitive proof of his ideas, but were less than convincing. Statistically speaking, statistics can be made to prove just about anything, on either side of a question - but isn't that Irrational ? (Predictably).

Good read
By MTBer
The author does a good job of presenting a wide range of psychological traps and irrational tendencies to which humans fall prey. The book is well written(although somewhat wordy at times) and easy to read. There are many enlightening passages which resonated well and were profound. If anything, most people will come away much better informed about a range of human flaws after reading this book. Some of the reasons that I didn't give this book the full five stars is that the author often rehashes previous research and findings by other scholars and taylors experiments which confirm already known ideas. Also, the book is written rather unevenly in the sense that you have to get through many tedious and laborious passages to get to an interesting point. I definitely felt at many points while reading this book that the author was adding a lot of non-value added filler material to meet a certain page # quota for the publisher. Still, this is a good book which I recommend as the author has gathered some very interesting information from which many people can benefit.
