MARK A. FILIPPELL is a co-founder and Managing Director at Western Reserve Partners, an M&A boutique. He has nearly thirty years of investment banking experience and has personally completed over 125 merger and acquisition transactions. Prior to co-founding Western Reserve Partners, he was the manager of the Mergers & Acquisitions Department at KeyBanc Capital Markets and McDonald Investments. Great intro lesson into M&A and actually nice to read!

I was looking for a book to get an introductory view of M&A and this book served its purpose in providing a broad overview of the process and some general tips. It was not a technical guide and was very enjoyable to read. This book probably would not be great for someone who is already in the M&A field or has a few transactions under their belt, but it is a great starting point. Thanks.

Essential addition to any workout lawyer's library

Mergers & Acquisitions Playbook is an essential addition to any creditor's rights, bankruptcy and workout lawyer's library, especially for those who represent buyers or sellers of distressed assets. Chapter 13, "Sales Forced by Bankruptcy or Financial Duress," and Chapter 14, "Working with Lawyers," provide useful and practical advice for those who play in this space, and Mr. Filippell's addition of "Appendix 14A: Seller's Attorney Pretransaction Checklist" is timely and helpful. Mr. Filipell's often tongue-in-cheek writing style, coupled with his ability to explain complex concepts with simplicity, makes this a joy to read.

About the Author
Joscelyn Godwin was born in Kelmscott, Oxfordshire, England on January 16, 1945. He was educated as a chorister at Christ Church Cathedral School, Oxford, then at Radley College (Music Scholar), and Magdalene College, Cambridge (Music Scholar; B.A., 1965, Mus. B., 1966, M.A. 1969). Coming to the USA in 1966, he did graduate work in Musicology at Cornell University (Ph. D., 1969; dissertation: "The Music of Henry Cowell") and taught at Cleveland State University for two years before joining the Colgate University Music Department in 1971. He has taught at Colgate ever since.

Literature review & esoteric musings with some practical use

I think a lot of people would not see much value in a book that essentially just collects all the literature on the esoteric nature of the vowels across historical languages, but I am a speech-language pathologist, and this is exactly the kind of "niche" book that appeals to my interests. It is part mysticism, part acoustical physics, and I think that it takes a professor of music to pull all of these areas together in the outlining of practical voice exercises. I encourage all speech therapists and vocal performers to take a look at this book for the good explanations for capturing harmonics and tones for potential spiritual healing (if you believe in that sort of thing), and all linguists and historians to take a look at the chapter on the vowels and the naming of the gods in history. Very succinctly written but also written for an educated audience.

Good, but not so much for me as maybe someone else

As a poet, I took Robert Bly's advice and picked this book up because I want to focus more on the natural music of language in verse. But I must tell you, this is heavy going, for as small a volume as it is. I found myself just not really interested in much of what was being said, and its focus is really geared more toward musicians -- singers -- than writers. I do think that anything that allows me to concentrate more on the sheer sounds of words and letters (as opposed to simply meaning) is a good thing, so I'm glad I do have it. But the most valuable part, for me, is probably the appendix that features some vocal exercises that get us to really listen to the way sounds sound coming out of our mouths.

one of my favorite books ever, really

I wish I had found this book when it first came out. I got so much out of this book, and much of it I truly wish I had when I was younger.

First off, it confirms the suspicion that so many musicians have-- that when they are playing they are more than happy but somehow engaged in a spiritual act. I have felt that for years, struggled to explain it friends and colleagues, and felt somehow like I had some secret that should be plain for everyone to see. This book confirms a powerful side of music that I've experienced, and it explains it (to me anyway)-- and for that I'm grateful. I have to point out that this is my own experience. While I think you can have this experience too, unless you're a musician and have at least a hint that it is there, you'll have to just take in on faith that singing in this manner can be a spiritual experience. Developing your voice takes a bit of practice but anyone can do it-- afterall the task here is to sing, not sing like Ella Fitzgerald. But I do promise that if you do it you'll like your singing a lot more than you might otherwise expect to.

Luckily the book is also a very practical tool that can help you use your singing to serve a wide range of practices. I've seen simplified vowel singing exercises used as warm-ups for acting troupes-- and that they were a tiny part of a "group mind" building exercise. But this book shows that they can be used for a much more powerful group mind exercise. I've since learned that Del Close on occasion had his students sing vowels-- I suspect he had this book or was aware of some of the source material. The point is that they applications of this kind of thing go far beyond manner described in the book.

Finally the book can serve as a big step forward for any performing artist that realizes that their art is also practice in "self-mastery". Your voice is a big part of who you are and of your presence-- either on stage, in a room full of people, or alone. This book shows why that is and gives you simple ways to build that part of yourself-- and it does so simply by showing what was done very long ago in the ancient world.

This is no new-age self-help book, though that might be how I'm describing it. It is very straight forward explanation of an enigmatic musical and spiritual practice from very long ago, and a survey of how that practice was interpreted by later generations. He simply shows what they did, and why they did it, and how successive researchers looked at these ancient practices. But, the inescapable conclusion anyone could draw from it is that you can and should do it too.

insight into the origins of Doyle's creativity

Although one may sicken slightly (or greatly) at the tally of seals knocked on the head, whales slaughtered, and bears bagged, this diary of a whaler's voyage into Arctic waters reveals the very young Doyle as a fearless, observant, and interesting crew member with a hand for drawing as competent as his gift for writing and recording. Doyle already began to 'contain multitudes' at this early age, and you can see how he was becoming the man who would have Holmes and Watson as avatars--himself more the bluff and hearty man of simple tastes, but harboring within the keener mind and sensibility of the observant connoisseur.

A good read about a by-gone era.

This makes a great gift to a teenager/young adult who is somewhat at loss as to a career. It documents the path of one distinguished individual in making that choice. Besides it is a nice pleasant, fascinating read. As an older man who essentially made his living as an economist and statistician, I was somewhat appalled by the brutal notion of making a livelihood from hunting, but the business as a business is a fiine example of of the way business contracts and risks were undertaking in a by-gone era.

As a book complete with editotial comments, it is a fine piece of scholarship and very intelligent editing. It was an easyread.

Terrific read, terrific presentation....

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a smart, engaging 15 year old whose ambition is to become an Arctic scientist and whose favorite author is Conan Doyle. But I cheated and read it through before I wrapped it. It's a beautiful edition at a more than reasonable price, and it's a rollicking read, as well, as you would expect from even the youthful Conan Doyle--even then a close observer of the world around him and the people who populate it. The recipient was suitably wowed, just as I was.

About the Author
Richard Hidary received a PhD from New York University and is associate professor of Judaic Studies at Yeshiva University where he teaches courses in Bible, Second Temple Jewish history, Dead Sea Scrolls, Talmud, Midrash, and Jewish ethics. His book, Dispute for the Sake of Heaven: Legal Pluralism in the Talmud, has been published by Brown University, and his articles appear in Encyclopedia Judaica, Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception, AJS Review, Dead Sea Discoveries, Dine Israel, Jewish Studies an Internet Journal, Okimta, and Conversations. Somewhat dense but well-done

This book describes the attitudes of the Talmudic sages towards legal pluralism- that is, differences of opinion among rabbis about halacha (Jewish law), and the extent to which rabbis should be allowed to follow minority opinions or local customs rejected in other cities.

Based on dozens of examples, Hidary suggests that there is a significant difference between the Jersualem Talmud ("JT") and the more influential Babylonian Talmud ("BT"). The former text generally maintains a more negative attitude towards diversity of halachic practice. For example, the JT proposes a universal system of rules for deciding between disputing sages, while the BT rejects this system. The BT often discusses diverse practices among the sages, while the JT tries to explain them away.

Why do these differences exist? Hidary proposes a few possible explanations. First, the JT was written in Israel, where Christianity was strong and rabbis thus might have sought to reduce diversity in order to prevent additional sects from splitting up Judaism. By contrast, Babylonia was mostly pagan. Second, Israel was dominated by the Roman Empire, which tended to favor codification of laws (a project that tends to reduce diversity). By contrast, Babylonia was dominated by the Persian Empire, whose legal texts (both secular and religious) were usually not codes and generally accepted multiple teachings. Third, in Israel the rabbinic movement was centered in the north of Israel; perhaps where all scholars lived in the same place, unity would be easier to achieve and disunity might seem more threatening. By contrast, Babylonia was more decentralized, and scholars could more easily carve out local fiefdoms and would be less likely to even know about the practices of other cities.

Drier Than It Should Be

American Art Since 1945 tackles a period of art that is drenched in social and cultural change. Post WW2 art forms are about breaking out, exploring, and defining new forms of creativity & expression. Yet this book is so dry and academic it fails to draw the reader in or excite. Instead the author repeats his few insights over and over and over. Then he repeats what he just said. And then he states it differently yet again. His writing style comes across like an undergraduate's; written with thesaurus in one hand and keyboard (or pen) in the other. The author tries much too hard to sound like & prove he's learned. That said, the book is well illustrated. And the text (style that it is) ties in to the images. But I think that true experts should be able to use accessible, exciting language to make even dry subjects (not this art, for sure!) fun to delve into and read about...this author didn't do that for me.

Rhetorical criticism Exploration and practice fourth edition

I purchased Sonja K. Foss' book a few weeks ago, as part of the recommended litterature for a university course in rhetorical analysis. It is quite helpful in its straightforward and pragmatic composition and level of speech.

The book explains and shows neo-aristotelian, cluster, fantasy theme, generic, ideological, metafor, narrative, pentadic and generative criticism.

Sonja gives us ample suggestions for suitable research questions, with suggested answers that correspond to example artifacts, at all levels of an analysis and for discussed methods.

She gives a clear view of the methods discussed, how they can be used and what merits they have.

All in all a most helpful book for the student of rhetorical criticism, not only for how to conduct an analysis, but also when writing the essay about it.

Other books might be more exhausive in the sheer number of theories covered, but Sonja's contribution is truly helpful.

it's a great introduction to rhetorical analysis

I teach rhetorical theory to writing majors who tend to be most interested in writing fiction and highly emotional poetry, so the concept of rigorous analysis is a challenge. Foss's strategies (and a great class) opens students' eyes to the power of rhetoric. It makes analysis accessible and useful. I love the book.

Helps with communication research papers

this is for college level communication research, which is more difficult than it sounds. communication theories are explained, the criticism process is explained and there are sample papers. this is not a beginner level book, this is for serious students of rhetoric. this book is not easy reading, but i gave it a high rating because i haven't found a communications book that was. however, it did tell me what i needed to know to criticize a rhetorical piece. it's best to read it, let it settle, then read it again because reading something or watching a movie (etc.) and pulling all of the elements of communication together for analysis is a detailed process.

About the Author

Scott Appelrouth (PhD, New York University, 2000) is Professor of Sociology at California State University, Northridge. His interests include sociological theory, cultural sociology, and social movements. He has taught classical and contemporary theory at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and has published several articles in research- and teaching-oriented journals on social movements, theory, and the controversies over jazz during the 1920s and rap during the 1980s. His current research focuses on political discourse in American party platforms.

Laura Desfor Edles (PhD, University of California, Los Angeles, 1990) is Professor of Sociology at California State University, Northridge. She is the author of Symbol and Ritual in the New Spain: The Transition to Democracy after Franco (1998) and Cultural Sociology in Practice (2002), as well as various articles on culture, theory, race/ethnicity, and social movements.

I would have to agree with another person's review that they didn't have many feminist theorists like they should have

This was a book selected by my professor for a Sociology course during summer semester. I was excited to read this book but with summer courses being faster paced I found it a bit challenging to grasp some of the material. What material I did grasp was truly interesting. I would have to agree with another person's review that they didn't have many feminist theorists like they should have. Regardless it was a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who is truly interested in the Sociology field.

I dislike it very much and would not buy it if ...

This is a very hard to understand and follow along with text. Typically text books are not something that we can choose whether or not we want to read. Some times I think its worth buying a text book rather than renting it as I may want to reference it later. This is not the case with this book. I dislike it very much and would not buy it if I had the chance.
