THE CASEBOOK

For the fifth edition, we developed the Introduction to Materials Management Casebook, authored by Arnold, Chapman, and Lloyd M. Clive. The casebook takes the student beyond the textbook problems by presenting a situation followed by related analysis questions. Most text chapters have cases associated with them, as noted in the table that follows the Table of Contents, and some cases bridge several chapters. Cases vary in level of difficulty, with the more challenging cases requiring students to think about the management issues involved in their decisions on the job. Reviewers noted that the casebook has added overall rigor to this text.

APPROACH AND ORGANIZATION

Materials management means different things to different people. In this textbook, materials management includes all activities in the flow of materials from the supplier to the consumer. Such activities include physical supply, operations planning and control, and physical distribution. Other terms sometimes used are business logistics and supply chain management. Often, the emphasis in business logistics is on transportation and distribution systems with little concern for what occurs in the factory. While some chapters in this text are devoted to transportation and distribution, emphasis is placed on operations planning and control.

Distribution and operations are managed by planning and controlling the flow of materials through them and by using the system's resources to achieve a desired customer service level. These activities are the responsibility of materials management and affect every department in a manufacturing business. If the materials management system is not well designed and operated, the distribution and manufacturing system will be less effective and more costly. Anyone working in manufacturing or distribution should have a good basic understanding of the factors influencing materials flow. This text aims to provide that understanding.

APICS—The Educational Society for Resource Management defines the body of knowledge, concepts, and vocabulary used in production and inventory control. Establishing standard knowledge, concepts, and vocabulary is essential both for developing an understanding of production and inventory control and for making clear communication possible. Where applicable, the definitions and concepts in this text subscribe to APICS vocabulary and concepts.

The first six chapters of Introduction to Materials Management cover the basics of production planning and control. Chapter 7 discusses important factors in purchasing; Chapter 8 covers forecasting. Chapters 9, 10, and 11 look at the fundamentals of inventory management. Chapter 12 discusses physical inventory and warehouse management, and Chapter 13 examines the elements of distribution systems, including transportation, packaging, and material handling. Chapter 14 covers factors influencing product and process design. Chapter 15 looks at the philosophy and environment of Just-in-Time manufacturing and explains how operations planning and control systems relate to Just-in-Time. Chapter 16 examines the elements of total quality management.

It worked for passing the first CPIM test.

I bought this because it is a suggested study item for passing the first exam in the CPIM series of exams. I passed the first exam using this book and the APICS exam manual. I should say that my score was barely passing but I studied for 12 hours the night before the exam while I was at a campsite. So I attribute my lackluster performance to my own study habits and not to the books I purchased. It worked for its intended purpose and I wouldnt have passed without it.

Great for APICS BSC Study

I bought this book as a reference to study for my APICS Basics of Supply Chain Exam. It was spot-on. The book reads relatively easily and can be completed in 1-3 days depending on your reading speed.

A good cover-to-cover read would adequately prepare someone to take the APICS BSC exam.

While feminism may have changed boardrooms, it didn't make much headway in bedrooms, argues philosopher/writer hooks. Women have made progress in regard to social empowerment, but the quest for emotional density for love has remained elusive. Why are men still so emotionally unsatisfying? Because, hooks argues, "patriarchal thinking has socialized males to believe that their manhood is affirmed when they are emotionally withholding." Patriarchy valorizes power and assigns it to men, and devalues nurturing and labels it feminine. Thus, young postfeminist women find themselves with "nothing to show" from their newly won equality but a double shift of work: first the paid job, then the physical and emotional homework of their relationship with their man. Still, as feminists of hooks's generation reach midlife, they may find it easier to rethink these terms of engagement, to risk changing things. The first step, she says, is self-love accepting one's body and soul just the way it is. Without such acceptance, women cannot escape the domination-submission dynamic. Even then, in this patriarchal universe finding love with another person may require some creativity. Hooks explores romantic friendships, lesbian loves and "circles of love" (which allow for committed bonds that extend beyond one partnership). A life with no coupling, but "a more authentic relationship between self and world," may also be satisfying. Twenty-something women who've embraced the highly problematic "bitch persona" Elizabeth Wurtzel has written of may sneer at hooks's affirming style, but older women, particularly those raising girls themselves, will find much to ponder here. wise, humane, and well worth reading.

I have read journal articles by bell hooks, but this is the first book I have read of hers. It won't be my last book by her.
Communion: The Female Search for Love is part memoir, part challenge, and very thoughtprovoking.
One aspect I liked best was her debunking of the myth of "women who love too much." Another center of focus is the effect of gainful employment on the perceptions of love.
Her language is direct and clear, but not simplistic.
This is a very good book, and one that I hope will be widely read and discussed.
Even though her subtitle is "The Female Search for Love," men can learn from this worthwhile book, if they have the courage to read it.
This might be an excellent choice for a book group.

Love from a feminist perspective

Communion is a discussion and legitimization of the pursuit of love from a mid-life feminist perspective. Hooks believes that the desire to understand how love works is a serious, important, and ultimately joyful life-work activity that should be studied and taught. The big question she attempts to answer is how to "find, keep, and make love despite the power of patriarchy."
The best part of this book is that Hooks always tells the truth as she sees it. There is no glossing over or contriving to make a point. Sometimes her language is sexually explicit and blunt. She explains love from the perspective of her own personal life experience and through intelligent observation and study of our culture and gender practices. The impact of the feminist movement is woven through her assessment. Unlike many other feminists, however, Hook's voice is not militant.
There is only one caution. The ever-present temptation for Hooks and for all of us is to find excuses why we cannot find love or be loving. From the ego's perspective, there is always a so-called justifiable reason for the rejection of another. In this case, the justifiable reason is patriarchy. However, unconditional love means that we undo the hate inour minds and extend love no matter what distressing disguise is presented to us.

And for a reader who is not hip to feminist thought or lit, this is a good soft entry. I enjoyed bell hooks analogies and statements regarding that women do seek love in so many ways and her most important point was that many women do not receive non-sexual love from men, which is necessary for balance in life, thus forcing them to seek it in so many other ways.

This book encouraged me to read and understand other bell hooks books that are phenomenal. I respect hooks for offering a wide spectrum on emotions, and reality

A first milestone in the study of Swarm Intelligence

The book of Bonabeau, Dorigo, and Theraulaz is an excellent example of synergetic work between a physicist, an engineer, and a biologist. The Swarm Intelligence principles are first described and understood through models in natural systems and then translated in optimization algorithms, distributed algorithms for robotic control, and so on. Even if the book does not completely succeed in linking all three disciplines together - computer science, engineering, and biology - under a sound, common formalism, it represents an extremely up to date collection of work carried out worldwide in the field of Swarm Intelligence. I strongly believe in the future of this field and of its applications to problems hard to tackle with classical techniques. This book summarizes in an very equilibrated way the early, promising steps of Swarm Intelligence.

Impressively good, but not an introduction

Compared to "Swarm intelligence" by James Kennedy, this one is not introductive but gets quite deep into the working of applying the "swarm" paradigm to optimization problems. I would rather recommmend for a person not used to meta-heuristics and optimization to first go to the book by Kennedy. Only if one is interested in using swarm for solving real optimization problems reading this one is a good idea.
This book illustrates several features of swarm behavior that can be leveraged for optimization. The authors writing style is equivalent to technical papers, so be prepared...this is no easy book.

About the Author
Camilla de la Bedoyere studied Zoology at Bristol University. She has written more than 250 books for children and is a popular QEB author. Her books cover a wide range of subjects, from science and natural history to geography. She lives in London, United Kingdom. Aleksei Bitskoff always loved to draw as a child, covering his school books in doodles. He studied language and literature, then moved to London to study English. His love of drawing brought him back to study illustration at the London College of Communications, then onto Camberwell for his Masters, graduating in 2010. Clients he has worked with include QEB, Templar Publishing and Andersen Press.

This book is an easy read for struggling readers. My son struggles to read but has loved reading this book! He loves the pictures and I have found him giggling as he's reading! He has come up to me and randomly given me penguin information. The vivid pictures have made the story stick. He is 8.
