Ian Nathan, who lives and works in London, has been a film writer, producer, broadcaster and magazine editor for twenty years. Very enjoyable, if a little thin

In his foreword to Alien Vault, author Ian Nathan recounts his first experience with Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi / horror masterpiece. Right away this book struck a chord with me, because the film planted the same hook in me at almost the same age, with a key difference - I actually saw "Alien" during its original theatrical run in the summer of 1979 at the tender age of 8. The movie mesmerized and terrorized me and I loved it (the fact that I saw the movie in the theater at such an early age is, in my mind, not the fault of poor parenting but rather attributable to parental capitulation in the face of constant nagging - post "Star Wars," I was mad for anything that hinted of space adventure or SF).

I love many films in many ways, and it's hard (and really rather pointless) to try to identify any movie as my "favorite;" but "Alien" comes as close as any. In the 32 years since its release, I've probably seen it at least 30 times; I usually watch it at least once a year. The recent release of the film and its sequels on the Blu-Ray format was a major event for me.

So, with my bona fides as an "Alien" buff established, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There are a few puzzling omissions (for example, Nathan completely ignores the fact that one of the original concepts for "Alien," a story called "B-17," was animated and then refitted with the story arc of the movie "Heavy Metal" for inclusion in that film). There may be little if any new ground broken with the book, but it would probably be hard to find any major new revelations on a three decade-old production. Having all of that information in a single volume with the durable presentation of this book is worthwhile enough; and in any case, there were enough interesting if small tidbits scattered through the text to make it a highly enjoyable read. I loved the ship blueprints and script pages. The original marketing concepts were a hoot. And I'm trying to find the perfect spot to put my Nostromo patch sticker.

Alien Vault is most likely best enjoyed by obsessives or semi-obsessives like me; but every book has its ideal audience. I have no idea how popular the original movie remains at large, and how many out there like me might love this book. But we know who we are, and for us, this is a must-have.

Great Insight Into The Origin of the Alien-verse

I must say that being a watcher of the Alien movies for the past 20-or-so years in videos, DVDs, multiple viewings on TV, I'm not really that educated in the intricate detailing of the Alien movie universe. Other than some well-known facts that four great directors directed the four movies (I won't count the AVP movies), H. R. Giger designed the original creature, and that it has gained an everlasting fandom among sci-fi fans, how the Alien movie idea came to be remained elusive for me. That is, until I read this book.

Some other reviewers said that this book contains things already discussed many, many times before elsewhere, but still for one latecomer like me remain fascinated to discover the real story of how the alien concept came to be. The book is filled with polaroids from the making of the movie. The retro feelings make you appreciate how the filmmaker went all out to make this film in the 70's. This was a time when cheesiness was still reigning and Star Wars was the new undisputed champion of blockbuster movies. They obviously took a leap faith in ushering Alien to the opposite tone of the cheery Star Wars.

The book comes with a slipcase and pouches filled with small goodies like the Nostromo logo sticker, blueprints of the spaceships, Giger's Alien designs, etc. Nice touches on the goodies, but I'm more into the book's information than these small gimmicks.

All in all, the Alien Vault is informative and inspiring without being too tedious. Though not perfect in the structuring the contents, it is a valuable resource to sci-fi fans in general, and especially the Alien xenomorph aficionados.

A fine book for a new fan, but old news to older ones.

I had only glanced through this book a few years ago, and liked what I saw. When a friend gave me a gift card, I decided to use it to purchase "Alien Vault" in the hopes that it would contain some new and interesting material about the production of one of my favorite films.

Unfortunately, if you're an avid Alien fan, there's very little original content. The author is clearly a devotee of the film, but it becomes clear very quickly that he did not do much research. Few of the photos were ones I'd never seen before, and the details of each chapter were quite scant, especially the evolution of the script and H.R. Giger's development of the creature. The inserts are unremarkable, and don't really add anything special to the package. The books skims over the surface, never digging deep enough, despite the wealth of material available.

If you're an Alien fan, and you've never read any behind-the-scenes material or watched any of the films with audio commentary, then you will enjoy this book. BUT, if you're already well-steeped in the lore of the franchise, you will read this book through and at the end say: "Yeah, what else?"

About the Author
Abbot Giuseppe Ricciotti was born at Rome in 1890. In 1906 he entered the Congregation of Canons Regular of the Lateran, and was ordained a priest seven years after. He was a noted biblical scholar and orientalist, teaching Hebrew and comparative Semitics for two years in Genoa. He also taught Church history at the University of Bari for ten years. Abbot Ricciotti s works include "The Life of Christ", "Paul the Apostle", "The Acts of the Apostles", "The Age of Martyrs", and "Julian the Apostate". His books remain unique and noteworthy for their accurate information and clear, attractive style. He died in 1964.

The Catholic Church vs. the Rationalists

"The Life of Christ" by biblical scholar, historian, archeologist and writer Giuseppe Ricciotti is a masterpiece of Catholic scholarship. This work could very aptly be subtitled "The Catholic Church vs. the Rationalists". Abbot Ricciotti was one of the first scholars to introduce archeology and geography to biblical criticism, exposing the mostly (northern) German modernists as the library-bound armchair critics they are. For two centuries, these nihilists had spun their crack-pot philosophies without ever having visited the holy land to examine the geography; they never went on archaeological digs, instead basing all their theories on pre-suppositions and presenting them as common-sense facts. In the introduction, Ricciotti traces the history of these rationalists, calling them out one by one, identifying their theories, and then blowing them to smithereens.

Be aware that there are two editions of this work, the Expanded Study Edition and Popular edition. They are not often tagged correctly, so I suggest that you contact the seller and confirm the number of pages to be sure what edition is being offered. The Expanded Study edition hardcover is 725 pages and the Popular edition is 400 pages. I highly recommend the Expanded Study Edition, especially in regards to the length and depth of the introduction, which gives a brief synopsis of volume 2 of the author's The History of Israel, and also covers the examination of the history of the historical-critical method mentioned above.

Comparing this work of Ricciotti's to a similar and earlier work of Father Marie-Joseph Lagrange, The Gospel of Jesus Christ, I'd say that Lagrange concentrates a bit more on the harmonization of the Gospels, while Ricciotti tends a bit more toward what I'd call "textual apologetic" - defending the text from the rationalists. Also, I'd suggest reading both volumes of Ricciotti's excellent The History of Israel before this work as it puts the New Testament in its proper historical setting.

A. Backward Glance

The only very minor criticisms I have of this work applies also to Ricciotti's The History of Israel: the pictures don't really add much - they are black and white and not very detailed - but as I did in the review of that earlier book, I'll chalk this up to the era in which this work was produced. Also, lacking are maps that relate directly to the topic being covered - that would have been much more useful than the pictures. There are, however, several helpful diagrams on various subjects. I heartily recommend this book to all Catholic and Prostestant lovers of Christ.

What a Life!

This is a highly scholarly book, yet written in an accessible and most readable style. The author fills in the gaps many Christians might have regarding the place, the time, and the characters of the Gospels. I highly recommend this book for anyone yearning for a deeper insight into the life and teachings of Jesus, especially those looking for a more complete discussion of the social structure and Jewish practices of the time.

This is a very well written text which is careful, prudent, academic, scientific and yet reverent.

Although not a novel nor fiction, it is hard to put down and hard to read only once.

It is a MUST READ for anyone of any faith.

You just can't BEAT this book!

Sarah and Shawn Carson are the real deal. In a field that is fraught with less than creditable people, these two are smart, creative teachers/authors who are superb in breaking information down and presenting it to the conscious and unconscious mind. This coaching system is versatile and powerful and can be used on clients as well as yourself. I have learned to use this pattern on myself so that I can quickly change a negative state into a positive state so that I am able to be the best version of myself. I highly recommend this book to any coach who wants to learn a a new technique to use with clients or become better versed in this coaching system if you already know it, as well as to the individual who wants to learn a strategy to help them to make positive changes in their life. This is a great, well-written book. Enjoy and thrive!

A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

A Thrilling Read

I first was introduced to Dorian Gray through a book club, and I thought 'Oh no, Oscar Wilde, here I go, another hard to read boring society book". I was wrong. Within the first two chapters of Dorian Gray I was intrigued and fascinated. This book deals with several issues that are as important now as they are today: the way our culture worships beauty and youth, an admiration that boarders on homosexual love, virtues, the differences between men and women, and what art is and what makes it truly art. Dorian Gray is a beautiful young man, who sees a portrait of himself and says "How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young...If only it were the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the portrait to grow old...I would give my soul for that!" The book takes off from there, leading you from a small theater to great parties. While younger readers may find some of the wording as tough as an old gym shoe, anyone older than 13 with an interest in mystery, romance, and how society runs, will find this a pleasurable and haunting read.

What made Oscar Wild(e)?
The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press has published a new edition of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. While there is no burning need for such a volume in the day of Lady Gaga and marriage equality, it's important to remember that Wilde spent two years in prison for being gay and for having the guts (stupidity?) to flaunt his sexuality. In many ways, it was the flaunting rather than the act themselves that so angered his persecutors.
And Dorian Gray, his first and only novel, was certainly a shot fired directly into the heart of Victorian prudery.
And in this day of Kindles, e-books and tweets, this is truly a magnificent job of bookmaking. Oversized, lavishly illustrated and gorgeously presented, Oscar would have loved it. The text is examined minutely, with a variety of comparisons from various publications of the novel, as well as Wilde's original manuscript. While there's nothing particularly new to discover in the emendations from the sources, merely a reinforcement of the outrageousness inherent in the piece, the scholarship is both astounding and informative.
The annotator and editor, Nicholas Frankel, easily and effortlessly places the modern reader in Wilde's time and place, London's late Victorian Age in London. There is still a tingle to Dorian's story of endless debauchery while he remains looking pure and innocent for decades and the painting ages and grows monstrous, reflecting his sins and crimes.
Strangely, the book seems more modern than one would imagine. Rather than merely a potboiler from two centuries back, WIlde's genius imbues the story with a strange and haunting immediacy, and a cautionary tale for us all: Be careful what you wish for.
One could hardly wish for a more beautifully accoutered book.

Soft in the middle, sharp at both ends.

Wilde's philosophical novel remains a compelling parable about outsourced guilt, and nearly every page has at least one eminently quotable line. Nevertheless, the lengthy middle section, which frames Gray's mounting debauchery in a detailed and prolonged discussion of Victorian tastes, grows quickly tedious. The passages are interesting in the abstract as a record of Wilde's apparently obsessive fascination with tapestries and ornament in general, but the novel wouldn't suffer much without them.

Still, though, Dorian Gray's predicament and the choices it enables are provocative, and he himself is a character with possibilities that extend far beyond the four walls of Wilde's short novel.

Good...not Great

The 20th Century was a very innovative time period in music. The influence of globalism and technology undeniably effected the musical atmosphere of the world in the 1900s. Yet Morgan seems far more concerned with atonalism and anti-classicism than the influence of jazz, popular music, recording technology, and even cinematography. While he does not fail to mention these influences, I believe that he did not emphasize their importances adequately. However, there is much to discuss in the world of 20th century music, and Morgan provides excellent insight into the topics that he chose to focus on. A good study of the era but not quite a great one.
