Excellent, Simple Book on Branding - Beautiful to look at and professional advice

I am an entrepreneur and it's true, you have to have a strong and consistent vision. Fiona Humberstone will definitely help you through her series of books, this one being the second (I have the first and love it!), to get your branding game on strong! So many of us need to bring clarity to our brand because it is so easy to lose track of how we look from the outside. We're on the inside of our brand, we don't always stop to think about how we look to others. While looking good is important, I found that it's equally important to have a strong message too. You have to know what you stand for and stand proud and confidently behind your company. Fiona put her years of expertise in this book and you'd be crazy to pass it by - it's both beautifully presented and easy to follow whether you are new to branding or somewhere in the middle looking for more help. Brand Brilliance will definitely be helpful to you as a business owner and I'm certain that reading it will give you a lot of new ideas and insights into branding but most importantly - that it's critical to your growth and if you ignore it, you definitely won't make the progress you are hoping for. About the Author
Paul Bushkovitch is a Professor of History at Yale University, where he has taught for the past 36 years. He is the author of Peter the Great: The Struggle for Power, 1671-1725 (Cambridge University Press, 2001), Religion and Society in Russia: The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (1991) and The Merchants of Moscow, 1580-1650 (Cambridge University Press, 1980). His articles have appeared in the Slavic Review, the Russian Review, Jahrb�cher f�r Geschichte Osteruopas and Kritika. He is a member of the editorial board for the Cahier du Monde Russe.

Engaging read!

This is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining histories I have ever read. Although the author inflects his writing with no sensationalism or emotional subjectivism, he knows how to turn a phrase in a way which leaves the reader eager to see what happens next. Every time I finished a chapter, I just had to read the first page of the next chapter to get a hint of what was to come! The history reads very cohesively, and binds together like a "story." I definitely plan on reading this whole book again, just for pleasure (I originally read it for a course).

Do note that this is not like a typical textbook-- there are no bolded terms, no chapter outlines, no supplementary timelines of important events, etc. As I said above, it reads more like a novel.

Good history of Russia

Despite the many excellent works on Russian history, decent single volume surveys are few and far between. Geoffrey Hosking and Abraham Ascher both have written short histories of Russia that, while good, left one wanting more (I was not that enamored with Hosking's longer survey). This book is significantly longer than either of them, and does a good job narrating and explaining Russian history.

A Good Introduction Lacking Depth

A very good introduction covering many aspects of Russian history that are overlooked in more general accounts, but lacking depth overall. The shifts in the second half of the book between leader-centric, cultural, and imperialist chapters became distracting. In condensing the dense subject, the author seemed to lose the ability to be a storyteller, but nevertheless enticed an interest in finding more sources for specific eras.

Applying the lessons of his bestselling study Emotional Intelligence, Goleman has found that business success stems primarily from a workforce displaying initiative and empathy, adaptability and persuasiveness?i.e., key aspects of what he defines as emotional intelligence. Emotional traits making up "EI," and now played out in the corporate world in this follow-up, include self-awareness, motivation, self-control, influence, altruism, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by others. Real-life examples abound in this serious attempt to relate what the author admits are soft skills in the hard-nosed world of business. With the landscape already carved out in the first work, this sequel is long on interviews, observations, and other attempts to indicate the value of understanding "EI" in business, but it could have benefited from serious editing. All anecdotes, very little advice

Like many reviewers before me, I bought this book thinking that it will suggest ways one can go about improving one's emotional intelligence. However, what I ended up getting is endless anecdotes.
Goleman spends the entire book, listing anecdotes after anecdotes, explaining "why" emotional intelligence is important, but not "how" to become more emotionally intelligent.
I do not need to know "why" EI is important; I bought the book, I know it is important.

A potboiler followup to his original book on emotional intel

This book was extremely disappointing. I read Goleman's original book on emotional intelligence and found it interesting. I purchased this book based on its title about working with emotional intelligence. I expected some guidance about how to work with people (employees) to improve aspects of their emotional intelligence. For example, how to help a person who is weak in self-confidence. This book, however, simply repeats the same thing over and over - company A instituted some training in emotional intelligence and it really helped them. Then, company B instituted some training ... Just like politics, helping people is 'local' or person-to-person. It appears that Goleman's answer to problems that people have is 'hire people who don't have those problems.' This book seems to be an attempt to profit from the success of his first book when he has nothing more to say.

A mostly excellent application of previous ideas

Since the publication of Daniel Goleman's first book, Emotional Intelligence he has generated a remarkable industry around the topic. In this book from 2000, Goleman applies the ideas of his previous book to the workplace. Why should executives bother with this soft stuff? According to research cited by Goleman (see the summary in Appendix 2) almost all of the abilities that distinguished stars from average performers were emotional competencies. While pattern recognition and "big picture" thinking were correlated with outstanding performance, cognitive abilities in general - above a certain threshold - did not have significant correlation. "Emotional intelligence" refers to a set of competencies that characterizes how people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. Building on previous work by others, Goleman characterizes emotional intelligence as being founded on five personal and social competencies: Self-Awareness, Self-Regulation, Motivation, Empathy, and Social Skills. Each of these five is further analyzed into 12 personal and 13 social competencies such as Accurate Self-Assessment, Self-Control, Initiative, Developing Others, Influence, Conflict Management, and Building Bonds.
Unlike IQ, we can continue to improve emotional intelligence. Working With Emotional Intelligence is not a how-to book in the usual sense. It will help any executive understand the importance of EI in all its diverse aspects as well as showing examples of strong and weak EI in individual and organizational contexts. Improving is not easy work. Goleman explains the neurological basis of much of EI, including the role of the amygdala (which can make us impulsive and which affects our resilience under stress) and its interaction with the prefrontal lobes (which together also affect the ability to adapt to change), and the role of the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline (which allow us to distinguish good stress from bad stress). Goleman looks at "empathic design" (p.139ff) and the contagious effects of emotions on groups, among other important applications in the workplace. He also provides a three-page list of "Guidelines for Emotional Competence Training". Although parts of Working With Emotional Intelligence will strike you as the obvious dressed up with stories, you can extract some important information by scanning through this book. In an age of record levels of job stress (according to an October 2002 study), any words of wisdom on this subject deserve a hearing.

Lots of detail.

A great reference for military modelers. The pictures are artists renderings not photos. Certainly not exhaustive as far as a complete reference guide but a good general foundation from European Officers of the 1800's to roughly the Iraq wars. Covers the foot soldiers to officers with various and sundry in betweens. A good general world-wide survey.

Of limited value.

I'm a professional cartoonist and comic book artist. After I purchased this book as reference for a job, I experienced a profound disappointment at finding so many B&W illustrations in the book. What "visual encyclopedia" of militaria runs B&W pictures? How is that useful as a reference work, particularly one about uniforms, which are defined by their colors and details?

Additionally, the book really skimps on pre-WWII content. Luckily, I hedged my bets and purchased some other uniform guides at the same time, so I'll be able to continue my work...no thanks to this disappointing excuse for an "encyclopedia." I should have read the reviews first and saved a few bucks. If you're in the market for a comprehensive reference work, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Giulio E. Lancioni, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Sense Organs, University of Bari, Italy. Prior to this position, he spent many years at the Department of Psychology, University of Leiden, The Netherlands.�His research interests include development and assessment of assistive technologies, training of social and occupational skills and evaluation of strategies for examining preference and choice with individuals with severe/profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (including post-coma persons in a minimally conscious state and persons with Alzheimer's disease).�He has published widely in these areas and serves in the editorial board of several international journals concerned with these topics.

Nirbhay N. Singh, Ph.D., BCBA-D, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at the Medical College of Georgia, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, Georgia, USA. Prior to his current appointment, he was a Professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and Director of the Commonwealth Institute for Family Studies, Richmond, Virginia. His research interests include mindfulness, behavioral and psychopharmacological treatments of individuals with disabilities and assistive technology for supporting individuals with severe/profound and multiple disabilities. He is the Editor-in-Chief of two journals: Journal of Child and Family Studies and Mindfulness and Editor of three book series: Mindfulness in Behavioral Health, Evidence-based Practice in Behavioral Health and Children and Families.
