The stories are full of slapstick, but hold together well and involve readers. Though the plots are contrived to tie into the guidebooks, they don't seem forced and the flow is good. The guides are written in a breezy style, paying just enough attention to the grosser aspects of each civilization to help maintain interest. Slavin's sunny pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are packed with details. Kids are sure to devour these lively books.

Very Nice Stationary Set, heavy stock, 2 envelope styles, 8 different card designs (I added pictures)

I recently ordered this set to use for holiday tips. Packaged in a very pretty big envelope. Inside are two different envelope styles and 16 cards.

Envelopes are 6 by 9 inches. Cards are a little smaller, odd shaped [see pictures]. Very colorful on heavy stock. Note these cards are not folded, they only have a front and a back with some lines for your notes. Stickers are very pretty.

Card designs are: snowman, dog, penguin, reindeer, Christmas tree, Santa, Santa's helper and gingerbread man.

Overall, a very nice set. Just shy of 5 stars because not all cards are Holiday themed [dog, penguin].

Simple Introduction to Ottoman Civilization

This is a concise study of Ottoman culture, society and the Ottoman administrative system. The Ottoman Empire, which lasted for 700 years and included three continents, is an important but often excluded ingredient in world history. This empire should be seen like its shorter lived sister-states (Mughal India and Safavid Iran) as a descendent of the Turco-Mongol steppe tradition under which Central Asia was unified and which created the first modern, large-scale, integrated, long-distance, old-world trading system.
The book begins with several brief chapters that outline Ottoman political history while the remaninder of the book provides an overvew of Ottoman institutions.
The volume, which includes a map, chronology, glossary, and index, is very easy reading. It could be used as part of a case study comparing the Ottoman Empire with other imperial systems. A must read for anyone interested in history who has never ventured beyond Western Europe or Russia while in their armchair. This book will provide a very different perspective on European political/diplomatic history.

Very brief and easy read: Worth it.

A small book, one volume in a larger series of studies of world civilazations published by Alfred A. Knopf. The book is sadly short and very brief; nevertheless, it is a helpful, clearly conveyed essay on the inner-workings of the Ottoman Empire, touching on its roots in Islamic traditions of government.
This book is not helpful as a history: it runs through, in very general terms, the history of the Ottoman Empire only for a background understanding of what was happening on the broader scope. This book is for those that know the history pretty well and want a definite understanding of the government hierarchy, the workings of the ulema, and the meaning of the ghazi tradition.
Norman Itzkowitz is a great scholar, and this study details perfectly how the Ottoman's owed their initial success to Islamic traditions, but also owed its subsequent stagnation and decay to the inherent reactionary elements of Islam.
Well worth the read: unfortunately, the book covers only up to the reign of Selim III (the Inspired), and thus stops right before the reform era. This is understandable, since such an addition would probably entail doubling the size of the book; still, without a look into the last, turbulent century of the Ottomans, it feels incomplete.

Does someone owe you money? Don’t worry. Or rather, don’t worry unduly. This book in its new third edition from Jordan publishing will show you -- and your clients if you’re a practitioner -- how security is taken – and enforced -- under English law.

Security is defined as ‘the creation and enforcement of proprietary rights to secure the payment of a monetary liability’ – somewhat in the nature of a secured loan, in other words. The book is therefore primarily concerned with property and insolvency law.

Note, as author Richard Calnan explains, that the new edition of this highly regarded title, ‘has, been prompted by the recent changes to the system for the registration of charges created by companies and LLPs.’

‘The new law,’ he adds ‘is more logical and simpler than the old law.’ As a result, the practice of the registering charges has changed, which is why Chapter 6, which deals with all aspects of the registration process, has been substantially re-written. Further changes have been covered in other chapters, including Chapter 7 which focuses on priorities.

For busy practitioners, the book is impressively easy to use. It is divided over fourteen chapters into seven sections from A to G, which together, cover every conceivable aspect of ‘taking security.’

Part A for example, enumerates and explains the various types of security (for those who may be wondering). And international lawyers, particularly in today’s global economy, will be especially interested in Part G which covers both cross-border security and cross-border insolvency matters.

Whatever issue you wish to look up within this volume of over 600 pages, the minutely detailed table of contents and numbered paragraphs will certainly help with navigation, as will the extensive index.
