Battle: The House War: Book Five, by Michelle West

The weeks since Jewel Markess ATerafin has been acclaimed ruler of her House have not been peaceful; four assassination attempts have been made on her life, and one of the most important members of her House Council has been forced to retire, leaving a seat empty at a time when she requires trusted allies.

The war in the distant South has ended; the armies, victorious, have returned to Averalaan. During the victory parade of the Kings' armies, the fifth assassination attempt occurs--in full view of the Ten, the Kings, and thousands of spectators. To survive, Jewel takes to the sky on the back of a winged cat; she returns to the Terafin Manse, leaving demonic destruction in her wake, the demon itself in pursuit. In the forest behind her manse, she has the power—barely—to stand against the demon; she does not have the power to destroy it.

In the aftermath of the Terafin's funeral, the Kings have demanded an audience with the newest ruler of House Terafin. A single, careless command given to the elemental earth on the day of the funeral has caused unexplained and disturbing changes to the palace itself. But before Jewel can answer the summons, she falls prey to the strange, sleeping plague that has felled citizens across the city of Averalaan—from the poorest of holdings to the wealthiest of mansions across the Isle.

It is there—in the uneasy land of dreams—that Jewel discovers the reason for the sickness, and there that she begins to understand the forces arrayed against both her House and the Empire; if she can survive the traps set by the Warden of Dreams and by her deadly, former allies, she will wake to a changed world—if she wakes at all.

Review
"This is the reason I fell in love with the books set in the Essalieyan universe." —Dear Author (for Battle)

"Richly and superbly detailed. Her characters live and sing." —Examiner (for Battle)

"Ms. West is able to develop in the reader a true sense of emotional connection to the characters. These are people who've been in my life since the late '90's and, like George R.R. Martin's characters, they feel like family. I'm much closer to Sagara's characters, but that's not surprising since that emotional attachment and the growth and development of the characters is central to the story of struggle.... I loved this book, as I've loved all of her books. If you're new to this kind of writing and have read George R.R. Martin's series and enjoyed it, I highly recommend these books." —Chaotic Compendium (for Skirmish)

"House Name is lush, richly intricate, heartbreaking in its subtle dealings with Jay and her den.... West has a brilliant hand in detail, in weaving in background to fuel the story without being clunky and boring, and in creating a luxuriously textured world that is at once familiar and strange. Some say Michelle West has been propelled into the ranks of George R. R. Martin and Robin Hobb—I say that she's been there all along and it's about time she was noticed as such." —Night Owl Reviews (for House Name)

"[City of Night] is a super action oriented investigative fantasy in an incredible world as Michelle West makes her empire and capital seem as if it comes from ancient history books rather than her imagination." —Alternative Worlds (for City of Night)

"This is a compelling story with riveting and finely wrought characters that will keep you up well into the night. This story will go down as one of the best novels in its genre, propelling West into the ranks of Robin Hobb and George R.R. Martin. It's simply a great read; don't miss it." —The Maine Edge (for The Hidden City)

More! I want more!!
By scifi chick
Battle, while mis-named, is a welcome addition to the House Name series. We see Jewel's first days as Terafin, as her power develops and she grows into her new role. Her den likewise mature, and Angel steps into the forefront as the book draws to a close. We learn a little more about the enigmatic Meralonne, as Jewel is propelled toward the Oracle's path. The book does an excellent job of setting the scene for the final book of the series, without giving the feeling of marking time. There is no epic conflict or battle, just a very well-crafted progression of events. I loved the book; Michelle West's vivid descriptions brought some of my favorite characters and events to life, and I had much enjoyment watching the obstreperous cats hiss and grumble their way through events. I ran into the same problem I always have with Michelle West's books; I devoured the book and was left wanting more. No matter how long her books are, they always end too soon!! I was delighted to find that the Sun Sword series and Hunter duology are now on Kindle - time to re-read them and impatiently await `War'.

Battle is the fifth book in the House War series and the 14th or 15th book In Essaylien. The author has spent so much time building a truly enjoyable and engrossing world, and continually reveals new bits of information, that the books are just a pleasure to read, and I never want the new one to end.

Tense, tight, and compulsively readable
By ML
If Battle: The House War: Book Five isn't the best book Michelle West has written, it's near the top of the list. Tense, tight, and compulsively readable, "Battle" sets the stage for the rapidly-approaching war between the (mostly good) Essalieyan Empire and the (mostly pretty damn evil) forces of Allasakar, Lord of the Hells.

The two preceding books, "House Name" and "Skirmish," devoted a good deal of attention to political struggles for control of Terrafin, the great merchant House. At the beginning of "Battle," Jewel Markess and her allies are firmly in charge, but hostile political maneuvers and assassination attempts -- some of them apparently sponsored by evil demons -- continue.

To further complicate Jewel's situation, the Twin Kings and those who serve them were so unnerved by the power she demonstrated at the climax of "Skirmish" that they are thinking about killing her themselves. (Jewel fended off a demonic attack on the kings from a long distance off, and reshaped their palace at the same time. No one else, immortal or human, is known to possess power of this magnitude.) The heads of the other major Houses make Jewel's position even more precarious by debating whether to support her or throw her to the wolves.

Worse, allies like the wizard Meralonne APhanniel, the dressmaker/reformed spy Haval, and the trader Jarvin are making demands on Jewel and showing their teeth. Even the talking winged cats are showing that they can only be trusted so far ... and Jewel has scars to prove it.

Underlying all of this is Jewel's recently-revealed power to remake landscapes and architecture throughout the city of Averalaan. Her influence over the elements makes her as powerful as the ancient mortals that built and ruled the Cities of Man (first seen in Sea of Sorrows (The Sun Sword, Book 4)). Her influence, however, must turn into control if she is to do what must be done to save the world from the forthcoming hellish onslaught. In addition, there is Allasakar's knowledge that only with Jewel can the good guys defeat him. She has therefore become a focus for demonic attacks, and while those attacks have not harmed her, others have become aware that being around her is rather dangerous.

Despite the title, there is less physical violence in "Battle" than in the earlier "House Wars" books. There is a great deal of conflict, but most of it is expressed in contentious talk and debate.

Much of the talk is, alas, repeated multiple times in this book and in several of the previous books -- talk about the mutual responsibilities between leaders and followers, about how a leader must present herself, about the dangers of various magical things, about the dance of political negotiation, about trust, etc. The repetition bothered me less in this book than in previous books, possibly because so much of it is well and wittily done.

I could complain about other faults in "Battle," like the implausibility of Jewel remaining so immature after so long on the House council and still managing to win the title of Terrafin, or like West's proclivity to launch into ridiculously convoluted language (look out for sentences beginning with "nor" or "neither"), especially in fight scenes, and then quickly transition into simple language filled with contemporary images and cliches (like her paraphrase of Gen. Helmuth von Moltke, "It is said no plan of battle survives first contact with the enemy"). But I won't complain ... any more than I have already.

This may be a "bridge" novel, as others have suggested, but it has enough action, enough intrigue, enough new revelations to stand on its own, as much as any novel of this sort can. West has done an exemplary job of setting up a complex and nuanced web of relationships, alliances, and antagonisms, not to mention expectations for the future. There's every reason to expect an exciting and bittersweet conclusion to the series.

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Data Manipulation in SQL (2nd Edition), by John L. Viescas, Michael J. Hernandez

Unless you are working at a very advanced level, this is the only SQL book you will ever need. The authors have taken the mystery out of complex queries and explained principles and techniques with such clarity that a "Mere Mortal" will indeed be empowered to perform the superhuman. Do not walk past this book!
--Graham Mandeno, Database Consultant

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals provides a step-by-step, easy-to-read introduction to writing SQL queries. It includes hundreds of examples with detailed explanations. This book provides the tools you need to understand, modify, and create SQL queries
--Keith W. Hare, Convenor, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 WG3--the International SQL Standards Committee

I learned SQL primarily from the first edition of this book, and I am pleased to see a second edition of this book so that others can continue to benefit from its organized presentation of the language. Starting from how to design your tables so that SQL can be effective (a common problem for database beginners), and then continuing through the various aspects of SQL construction and capabilities, the reader can become a moderate expert upon completing the book and its samples. Learning how to convert a question in English into a meaningful SQL statement will greatly facilitate your mastery of the language. Numerous examples from real life will help you visualize how to use SQL to answer the questions about the data in your database. Just one of the "watch out for this trap" items will save you more than the cost of the book when you avoid that problem when writing your queries. I highly recommend this book if you want to tap the full potential of your database.
--Kenneth D. Snell, Ph.D., Database Designer/Programmer

I don't think they do this in public schools any more, and it is a shame, but do you remember in the seventh and eighth grades when you learned to diagram a sentence? Those of you who do may no longer remember how you did it, but all of you do write better sentences because of it. John Viescas and Mike Hernandez must have remembered because they take everyday English queries and literally translate them into SQL. This is an important book for all database designers. It takes the complexity of mathematical Set Theory and of First Order Predicate Logic, as outlined in E. F. Codd's original treatise on relational database design, and makes it easy for anyone to understand. If you want an elementary- through intermediate-level course on SQL, this is the one book that is a requirement, no matter how many others you buy.
--Arvin Meyer, MCP, MVP

Even in this day of wizards and code generators, successful database developers still require a sound knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL, the standard language for communicating with most database systems). In this book, John and Mike do a marvelous job of making what's usually a dry and difficult subject come alive, presenting the material with humor in a logical manner, with plenty of relevant examples. I would say that this book should feature prominently in the collection on the bookshelf of all serious developers, except that I'm sure it'll get so much use that it won't spend much time on the shelf!
-- Doug Steele, Microsoft Access Developer and author

Over the last several decades, SQL has evolved from a language known only to computer specialists to a widely used international standard of the computer industry. The number of new applications deployed each year using SQL now totals in the millions. If you are accessing corporate information from the Internet or from an internal network, you are probably using SQL. This new edition of SQL Queries for Mere Mortals helps new users learn the foundations of SQL queries, and is an essential reference guide for intermediate and advanced users.

The accompanying CD contains five sample databases used for the example queries throughout the book in four different formats: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and later, Microsoft Access 2000 and later, MySQL version 5.0 and later, and SQL scripts that can be used with most other implementations of the language.

"Language is by its very nature a communal thing;
that is, it expresses never the exact thing but a
compromise--that which is common to you, me, and everybody."
--Thomas Earnest Hulme, Speculations

Learning how to retrieve information from or manipulate information in a database is commonly a perplexing exercise. However, it can be a relatively easy task as long as you understand the question you're asking or the change you're trying to make to the database. After you understand the problem, you can translate it into the language used by any database system, which in most cases is Structured Query Language (SQL). You have to translate your request into an SQL statement so that your database system knows what information you want to retrieve or change. SQL provides the means for you and your database system to communicate.

Throughout our many years as database consultants, we've found that the number of people who merely need to retrieve information from a database or perform simple data modifications in a database far outnumber those who are charged with the task of creating programs and applications for a database. Unfortunately, no books focus solely on this subject, particularly from a "mere mortals" viewpoint. There are numerous good books on SQL, to be sure, but most are targeted to database programming and development.

With this in mind, we decided it was time to write a book that would help people learn how to query a database properly and effectively. We produced the first edition of this book in 2000. With this new edition, we also wanted to introduce you to the basic ways to change data in your database using SQL. The result of our decision is in your hands. This book is unique among SQL books in that it focuses on SQL with little regard to any one specific database system implementation. This second edition includes hundreds of new examples, and we included versions of the sample databases using the popular open-source MySQL database system. When you finish reading this book, you'll have the skills you need to retrieve or modify any information you require.

This Book Is Nothing Short Of Fantastic!
By Larry
It's easy to find a good book that will provide definitions and examples for inner joins vs. outer joins, subqueries, etc. You can read them and understand the definitions and/or examples, however, when you come across a 10 - 20 line query in your job or have to create your own complicated query from scratch you realize just how tenuous your gut-level understanding of this mysterious thing called SQL really is.
This book will give you the gut-level understanding you so desperately crave - and need if you are working with databases.
The authors provide clear explanations of the various SQL constructs for both the SQL Standard and real world levels (which are oftentimes two different things). They further deconstruct real-world issues by also describing the anomalies between some of the more popular databases.
But you can get all this from just about any other good SQL book. Where this one really shines is the way it leads you from simple to more and more complex queries via well-crafted and well-explained examples. They progress from simple queries to queries containing expressions to filtering data with a 'where' clause to inner joins to outer joins to unions to subqueries to aggregate functions to grouping data and then filtering that data by 'having' clauses. They end up by covering updating, inserting, and deleting data.
They give tons of examples that illustrate how to solve common problems and the more trickier "gotchas" that you're likely to run into. These examples occur both within the meat of the chapter, i.e. where they are explaining terms and concepts, and at the end of the chapter where they describe how and why they put the queries together the way they did.
The queries are all against 5 databases containing from 6 to 13 tables each. The databases, tables, and all of the queries are contained on a CD ROM that accompanies the book.
Each chapter ends with 3 or 4 problems for *each* of the 5 databases. If you really want to learn how to write complex queries then do as many of the problems as you can. The solutions are on the CD so if you get stuck you can see how the authors solved the problem. The more you do, the more you will find that you can craft fairly complex SQL queries "from the hip". As one who did all of the sample problems I can assure you that that statement is no lie.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

Great, but with a MAJOR caveat!
By SoCal Thom
This book is terrific for database newbies, such as myself, who need to get up to speed on SQL as quickly as possible. But, please be aware of one MAJOR flaw if you are a (insert shudder here) Windows Vista user:

The book includes a CD, advertised as usable on either a Windows or a Mac system, for all of the sample databases and queries referenced in the text. On the Mac side, the files will load effortlessly (natch) -- but, if you are using Windows Vista, your system won't even see the Windows partition on the disk. Strangely, it will see the Mac files, but of course, you can't use them. If you are using Windows XP, however, the files show up just fine. Turns out that the CD is formatted as HTF, and Vista will not read those files. The files are not available online for download (at least as of this writing), so forewarned is forearmed.

SQL review
By Jerry Vale "Sam"
This is a great book especially for a beginner starting to do SQL queries. The examples in the book are clear and easy to follow and it's nice there's a CD which has good examples also. The book also describes inner and outer joins and grouping data. This book has helped me in my work.

A Shark Going Inland Is My Chief: The Island Civilization of Ancient Hawai'i, by Patrick Vinton Kirch

Tracing the origins of the Hawaiians and other Polynesians back to the shores of the South China Sea, archaeologist Patrick Vinton Kirch follows their voyages of discovery across the Pacific in this fascinating history of Hawaiian culture from about one thousand years ago. Combining more than four decades of his own research with Native Hawaiian oral traditions and the evidence of archaeology, Kirch puts a human face on the gradual rise to power of the Hawaiian god-kings, who by the late eighteenth century were locked in a series of wars for ultimate control of the entire archipelago.

This lively, accessible chronicle works back from Captain James Cook’s encounter with the pristine kingdom in 1778, when the British explorers encountered an island civilization governed by rulers who could not be gazed upon by common people. Interweaving anecdotes from his own widespread travel and extensive archaeological investigations into the broader historical narrative, Kirch shows how the early Polynesian settlers of Hawai'i adapted to this new island landscape and created highly productive agricultural systems.

A spell-binding voyage of discovery of Ancient Hawaiian Civilization
By Roger V. Meeker
Many readers might well assume that a study about an ancient civilization written by an archaeologist would tend to be a rather dry subject matter; or, even if the subject matter itself was interesting, the writing could well be staid and uninvolving. Nothing could be further from the truth with Dr. Kirch's sweeping presentation of ancient (pre-European contact) Hawaii. As a long-time student of Polynesian and Hawaiian prehistory, and having read numerous books on the subject over more than four decades, I can assure readers that nothing quite like this volume has ever been written.

What makes this work so unique is the way it integrates what has been learned from modern archaeological science with the ancient oral traditions preserved by the indigenous cultures. Students of Hawaii and greater Polynesia know well that these island peoples' histories -- how and when the far reaches of the huge expanse of the Pacific Ocean were discovered and settled, who the great protagonists were that led the voyaging, settlement and development of the culture, and what the motivations or conflicts were that drove these events -- were maintained and passed on orally through the generations, as there was no indigenous written language. Fortunately, a number of 19th century Native Hawaiian scholars (Kamakau, Malo and others) documented these oral traditions in great detail. Although Western scholars have often debated their reliability, Dr. Kirch demonstrates how the extensive archaeological evidence compiled largely over the past half century actually supports this rich oral history. His book offers a totally unique integration of the Polynesian and Hawaiian oral traditions with the compelling evidence provided by 20th and 21st century archaeology.

Part autobiographical, the reader joins Dr. Kirch on his own personal journey, first as a teenager working at Hawaii's renowned Bishop Museum, then later as a scientist, in the study of Hawaiian and Pacific island archaeological sites. As Dr. Kirch makes individual discoveries, so does the reader. We learn how and where Polynesians became "Polynesian", how the great Polynesian triangle was eventually discovered and settled, and finally how the Hawaiian Islands were settled and evolved as a civilization. It is fascinating to learn exactly how individual archaeological findings slowly reveal important information about issues like whether long-distance voyaging between the various Polynesian island groups was maintained after original settlement, and how Hawaiian civilization evolved from a kinship society to a divine kingship one. Throughout the storytelling, the reader also gets a revealing look into exactly how archaeologists actually go about doing their business.

Each chapter is completely unique -- some relating previous scholarly thinking, some examining recent archaeological discoveries, others examining oral histories, including the amazing competition between Hawaiian chiefs for political, economic or military superiority -- but all of it eventually merges into a complete synthesis and analysis of the forces underlying the evolution of ancient Hawaiian civilization. The concluding epilogue chapter provides a insightful summation of the significance of Hawaii's development in a greater world context. Finally, I'll leave it to the reader to discover the fascinating and very appropriate meaning behind the book title. Footnotes are not included, as the book is intended more for general readership rather than just academicians. However, for readers whose interest is piqued and seek related or more detailed information, a wealth of bibliographic reference sources are listed at the end, chapter by chapter. Also included are a list of Hawaiian historical individuals as well as a glossary of Hawaiian words.

Dr. Kirch, a professor of anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley, has for decades worked with virtually all of the preeminent authorities on Pacific & Polynesian prehistory, including Kenneth Emory, Roger Green, Marshall Sahlins, and dozens of others. He has written prolifically, authoring numerous academic papers and books, and no one is more qualified to write about Hawaiian and Pacific anthropology and archaeology. A SHARK GOING INLAND IS MY CHIEF is a true tour de force accomplishment. In my opinion, this work offers not only the current state of knowledge on Hawaiian prehistory, but easily stands as the definitive treatment on the subject. An exhilarating and brilliant read, it is much deserving of as broad an audience as possible, and earns my absolute highest praise.

Development in isolation
By Hatbox Dragon
Kirch relates his interpretation of the development of civilisation in the Hawaiian islands, from their initial settlement by Polynesian voyagers to the arrival of the British Navy's Captain Cook in 1778. An archaeologist who has excavated in Hawaii, he describes what has been learned from the archaeological record as the approaches and scientific techniques of the discipline developed over the decades, and supplements this with material from Hawaiian oral tradition, first committed to writing in the early 19th century. The book takes a chronological approach, both through Hawaii's development and Kirch's own career, explaining key concepts in agriculture, religion and political and social organisation along the way.

As someone who knew nothing of Hawaii's Polynesian civilisation, the information in this book was a revelation. It was particularly interesting to read about the development of archaeology in a completely separate setting to that of the Near East and the debates over the similarities and differences that develop in civilisations that never came into contact with each other. This is a broad overview of the period, though, its major features and political developments, so those looking for detailed information on daily life or particular groups in society will need to look elsewhere. Pitched at a general audience and full of information, this is a good introduction to the subject that can be followed up with the suggested further reading.

I will say, though, that I have mixed feelings about this book. I didn't find it entirely to my taste, and not just because I'm someone who prefers a straight "academic" style with lots of footnotes. I found Kirch's interjections of his personal reminiscences into the historical narrative awkward at times and a little heavy on unnecessary detail; likewise the intrusion of his editorial voice into the invented tale of an early chief voyaging from Tahiti and discovering the Hawaiian islands. His writing style somehow seemed more effective in clearly conveying information in the archeological sections rather than those relating the historical narrative. Some points of detail were explained repeatedly, which became a little irritating. Also irritating was the claim in the epilogue that the social sciences are the real "hard" sciences; honestly, this book is not the place for interdisciplinary sniping. That's all a matter of taste, though, and nothing to do with quality.

More seriously, the book does not include a critical examination of the Hawaiian oral tradition and its transformation into written history, and therefore its value as a historical resource. I found the absence of this material very surprising, especially when the book draws so heavily on that tradition. Some line drawings of artefacts (all those adzes and fishhooks), a pronunciation guide and a fully comprehensive glossary of Hawaiian terms used would have been helpful, too, as a means of making a strong book even better.

A remarkable story expertly told
By Amazon Customer
I received this new book, "A Shark Going Inland is My Chief..." as a gift for Christmas from family in Hawai'i. My uncle had read and recommended the book. Having now devoured the story that the author artfully tells over the course of a few days, the book sits on the bedside table, where I keep nosing around at favorite passages like a big fish after a satisfying meal.

Having grown up windward side of O'ahu this story of ancient Hawai'i particularly resonates for me. While I currently live on the mainland, Hawai'i will always be home and I still feel a connection to the land and the people. As an adult, I realize how little I knew about the real story of Hawai'i as a young person growing up there. Patrick Kirch describes the manner in which Captain Cook "...pierced the veil of isolation" that had shrouded the islands before his arrival. The story that he shares has helped to pierce the veil of my own ignorance about the people, history, and archaeology of the islands where I was raised and which I love. The book is already a treasured gift.

I remember as a boy the tremendous feelings of pride and awe when Hokule'a first made her voyages in 1976. I am heartened when I hear family tell me stories about over-hearing fluent Hawaiian spoken in Honolulu, and I still look forward to a day when more of the majesty and depth of the Hawaiian culture is restored to daily life of the people of Hawai'i. Telling the story of the Hawaiian people and land as the author does - with intimacy and reverence - is an integral part of the long arc of remembrance and restoration.

Patrick Kirch relates a story from history in a way that is stirring, immediate, and relevant to our lives today - whether they are lived in Hawai'i or in other far-flung places to which our various voyages have taken us. I look forward to reading his other books with a whetted appetite.

For more than thirty years, audiences have been simultaneously captivated and appalled as the spaceship Nostromo is invaded and its crew stalked by a terrifying parasitic creature. From the gore of the infant alien bursting from Kane's chest to the mounting claustrophobia as Ripley discovers the monster has followed her into the escape shuttle, Alien is a chilling masterpiece. Now, ALIEN VAULT opens a portal into the making of this legendary film, tracing its path from embryonic concept to fully-fledged box office phenomenon. Featured herein are director Ridley Scott's own annotated storyboards, Polaroids and script pages; the elegant but disturbing concept artwork of H.R. Giger; sketches and construction blueprints for the Nostromo; costume designs by Moebius; a treasure trove of never-before-seen photographs of the cast and crew; and ten meticulously reproduced artefacts, enclosed in vellum envelopes, for readers to remove and examine more closely. Fully authorized and illustrated throughout, ALIEN VAULT is the ultimate tribute to a movie that changed cinema for ever.

About the Author
Ian Nathan, who lives and works in London, has been a film writer, producer, broadcaster and magazine editor for twenty years. As executive editor of Empire, the world's leading film magazine, he is allowed to feed his passions on a daily basis: generating, editing and writing articles as a thinly veiled excuse to provide the world with his opinions. Like any healthy cinema obsessive, he grew up on James Bond, Indiana Jones, and sneaking into horror movies when he was tall enough. It has grown into a magnificent obsession with everything from Hitchcock to Kurosawa, from arcane film theory to picking your favourite Harrison Ford punch. He has had the immense good fortune of traversing the globe, interviewing the great and good: watching the godlike Steven Spielberg at work, eating ice cream with Peter Jackson and a tableful of orcs, buying Sigourney Weaver breakfast, and being hugged by both Oliver Stone and Kate Winslet -sadly, not at the same time. He has regularly contributed to books; newspapers such as the London Times and Independent; and magazines; had a weekly radio show; and produced TV documentaries and award ceremonies. The work of Sir Ridley Scott, in particular the extraordinary Alien, has been seminal in inspiring him to what film could be, and how much there is to discover within it.

Very enjoyable, if a little thin
By Thomas A. Baker
In his foreword to Alien Vault, author Ian Nathan recounts his first experience with Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi / horror masterpiece. Right away this book struck a chord with me, because the film planted the same hook in me at almost the same age, with a key difference - I actually saw "Alien" during its original theatrical run in the summer of 1979 at the tender age of 8. The movie mesmerized and terrorized me and I loved it (the fact that I saw the movie in the theater at such an early age is, in my mind, not the fault of poor parenting but rather attributable to parental capitulation in the face of constant nagging - post "Star Wars," I was mad for anything that hinted of space adventure or SF).

I love many films in many ways, and it's hard (and really rather pointless) to try to identify any movie as my "favorite;" but "Alien" comes as close as any. In the 32 years since its release, I've probably seen it at least 30 times; I usually watch it at least once a year. The recent release of the film and its sequels on the Blu-Ray format was a major event for me.

So, with my bona fides as an "Alien" buff established, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There are a few puzzling omissions (for example, Nathan completely ignores the fact that one of the original concepts for "Alien," a story called "B-17," was animated and then refitted with the story arc of the movie "Heavy Metal" for inclusion in that film). There may be little if any new ground broken with the book, but it would probably be hard to find any major new revelations on a three decade-old production. Having all of that information in a single volume with the durable presentation of this book is worthwhile enough; and in any case, there were enough interesting if small tidbits scattered through the text to make it a highly enjoyable read. I loved the ship blueprints and script pages. The original marketing concepts were a hoot. And I'm trying to find the perfect spot to put my Nostromo patch sticker.

Alien Vault is most likely best enjoyed by obsessives or semi-obsessives like me; but every book has its ideal audience. I have no idea how popular the original movie remains at large, and how many out there like me might love this book. But we know who we are, and for us, this is a must-have.

Great Insight Into The Origin of the Alien-verse
By Hengky Tanoyo
I must say that being a watcher of the Alien movies for the past 20-or-so years in videos, DVDs, multiple viewings on TV, I'm not really that educated in the intricate detailing of the Alien movie universe. Other than some well-known facts that four great directors directed the four movies (I won't count the AVP movies), H. R. Giger designed the original creature, and that it has gained an everlasting fandom among sci-fi fans, how the Alien movie idea came to be remained elusive for me. That is, until I read this book.

Some other reviewers said that this book contains things already discussed many, many times before elsewhere, but still for one latecomer like me remain fascinated to discover the real story of how the alien concept came to be. The book is filled with polaroids from the making of the movie. The retro feelings make you appreciate how the filmmaker went all out to make this film in the 70's. This was a time when cheesiness was still reigning and Star Wars was the new undisputed champion of blockbuster movies. They obviously took a leap faith in ushering Alien to the opposite tone of the cheery Star Wars.

The book comes with a slipcase and pouches filled with small goodies like the Nostromo logo sticker, blueprints of the spaceships, Giger's Alien designs, etc. Nice touches on the goodies, but I'm more into the book's information than these small gimmicks.

All in all, the Alien Vault is informative and inspiring without being too tedious. Though not perfect in the structuring the contents, it is a valuable resource to sci-fi fans in general, and especially the Alien xenomorph aficionados.

A fine book for a new fan, but old news to older ones.
By David Simmons
I had only glanced through this book a few years ago, and liked what I saw. When a friend gave me a gift card, I decided to use it to purchase "Alien Vault" in the hopes that it would contain some new and interesting material about the production of one of my favorite films.

Unfortunately, if you're an avid Alien fan, there's very little original content. The author is clearly a devotee of the film, but it becomes clear very quickly that he did not do much research. Few of the photos were ones I'd never seen before, and the details of each chapter were quite scant, especially the evolution of the script and H.R. Giger's development of the creature. The inserts are unremarkable, and don't really add anything special to the package. The books skims over the surface, never digging deep enough, despite the wealth of material available.

If you're an Alien fan, and you've never read any behind-the-scenes material or watched any of the films with audio commentary, then you will enjoy this book. BUT, if you're already well-steeped in the lore of the franchise, you will read this book through and at the end say: "Yeah, what else?"
