About the Author
Not much is known about Elaine Hamilton other than she wrote a series of mysteries in the 1930's featuring Inspector Reynolds of Scotland Yard. The Westminster Mystery published in 1930 was the first of these. Other titles in the series include Murder in the Fog (1931), The Green Death (1932), The Chelsea Mystery (1932), The Silent Bell (1933), Peril at Midnight (1934), Tragedy in the Dark (1935), The Casino Mystery (1936) and Murder Before Tuesday (1937).

Dark Derring-Do

Elaine Hamilton's Inspector Reynolds is always good fun, if you enjoy the complicated plots and sometimes overly exotic characters characteristic of the period. Reynolds himself is a bit of a plod, but the villains are grotesque and there is always a good girl who has gotten herself into deep waters but will be saved by a romance. Fun, escapist reading for those who enjoy even the second tier mysteries of the Golden Age.

A Haitian by birth, Fatton (government and foreign affairs, Univ. of Virginia) has written a somewhat pessimistic analysis of politics in Haiti from 1986 to the end of 2001. He sees this period as starting on a positive note with the promise that democracy would succeed and then goes on to examine the numerous changes of government from the fall of the Duvalier dictatorship in 1986 to Jean-Bertrand Aristide's second inauguration as president in December 2001. The author suggests that Haiti's experience shows that for democracy to succeed in any country, there needs to be a balance of power between two competing classes, the bourgeoisie and the workers. The absence of strong political organizations from both classes in Haiti has led to a power vacuum and the consequent failure of democratic institutions. The result is what Fatton calls "predatory democracy," which has the trappings of democracy but functions more like authoritarianism or polyarchy. This book will be of interest to libraries with collections on the Caribbean and general political theory.

The disinformation narrative continues...

This is a good addition to the anti-democracy propaganda section of your research library. Like Abbie Hoffman liked to say, "Steal this Book." Check it out in your library, get the cheapest used version you can. Whatever you do, don't support the institutions that employ Robert Fatton. Of course, that would probably mean becoming a radical tax protestor too; not something that I recommend.

Fatton has a long history of enabling the New American Empire's misinformation campaign against the pro-democracy struggle in Haiti. Using rabid reactionary revisionist sources -- like Lynn Garrison: "Voodoo Politics" -- as "source" material, Fatton reconstitutes their mythomaniacal fabrications to make them more suitable for "respectable" research material. The penetration of the historical record by the Intelligence Community is a treacherous subject to study. The massive disinformation effort unleashed on Haiti over the years should have its own Holocaust Museum.

Transition from Authoritarianism to People Power, A Difficult Process

Observers of Haiti's political, social and economic development will be brought to reality by Dr. Fatton's work.

"The process of democratization that has marked the modern history of Haiti.... suggest that the transition from authoritarianism to populism was a function of the ascendancy of the civil society and, in particular, popular civil society," says Fatton (pp. 1-2).

He argues that the classical model adopted for the democratization of Haiti has many inherent weaknesses.

While it may have removed military authoritarianism, it has retained the institutionalized structures of dictatorship, legacies of the State, which are deeply entrenched in the society.

Consequently, the Country today, has an unconsolidated, dysfunctional democracy which is characterized by brutality, and the treachery of the bourgeoisie who monopolizes state power and wealth.

This is what Fatton deems to be a "Predatory democracy."

Dr. Fatton is of Haitian ancestry or Haitian by birth. He appears to write not only for the Haitian people but also as one of them.

He is a brilliant intellectual and scholar, not a revolutionary like "Old"Toussaint, Dessalines or Regaud, the lesser.

However, his predictive skills as a political scientist are brilliant.

I do not share all of Dr. Fatton's views on Aristide, bearing in mind the historical difficulties facing that Country and the obvious geo-political problems of that region.

The work is fairly easy to read. I highly recommend it to students and general readers.

A well researched look at modern politics in Haiti

This book presents a very thorough explanation of the political situation in Haiti since the fall of the Duvaliers. Because it was published in 2002 it obviously does not discuss the most recent events in Haiti, but the book is a very useful tool in understanding what is going on in that country now. The author actually predicted the events of Jan-Feb 2004 as a possibility of what could happen in that country. I give it a 4-star rating because the language is somewhat dense; the book is not for the casual reader.

I have always enjoyed good action-packed stories that fire up my imagination, and my goal is to write novels that I personally would love to read. Stan Smith has lived most of his life in the Midwest United States andcurrently resides in Warrensburg, Missouri. He writes adventure novelsthat have a generous sprinkling of science fiction. Sequel lives up to its promise

After reading Diffusion, the first book in this science-fantasy series, I was looking forward to reading this sequel. And, I wasn't disappointed at all. Infusion continues the excitement built up for the reader as the main characters journey back home to the United States, bringing with them the 'gift' discovered earlier in the Indonesian rainforests. Can humanity be trusted to make good use of the object the Quentin Darnell and his group carry with them? There are plenty of twists, turns, and surprises in the plot that kept me guessing. Is this the end of this tale? Author Stan C. Smith leaves just enough to make me wonder, and hope for more. Riveting Read

I just finished Stan Smith's second book, Infusion! I loved it (even more than book one, Diffusion -- if that is possible)! I can't tell you the number of times that I found myself holding my breath in anticipation of next plot twist. Stan is more than an author--he is a story weaver extraordinaire! My favorite Infusion quote was "Power earned is used with caution, with an understanding of consequences. Power that is given to us, on the other hand, is misunderstood. And so we toy with it." I was actually sad to reach the end of book two. Not because I did not like the ending, but because I wanted the story to continue. At one time, Stan hinted about a book three, and the ending suggests this as is a possibility as well. If you are looking for a riveting read, then this is the book for you! P.S. This would make a sensational movie!

I believe these books are worth your time, they are full of suspense, imagination and unique characters. They will pull you into a world of possibilities and the unimaginable. I love that it is a young boy, Bobby, who is insightful enough to figure out a way to give this gift to the world. This book, and book one, held my interest from page one to the very last page! Here's hoping there is a third book where these characters can continue their adventures.

Hilarious.

I was unfamiliar with Jane Mai's work, but read an intriguing review for this book on the AV Club. I couldn't put this book down. Mai's thoughtfully illustrated diary entries alternate between hilarious and touching. Really excellent autobio comics.

Nice piano book of James Blunt song hits

First off, I think James Blunt is a master at his craft - that is singing songs with great intensity and feeling. He loves what he does and it shows in his music. Now, I play piano and I wanted of course to be able to play some of his songs for piano and I highly recommend this piano book for all those that love his music. It is written for beginner/intermediate players and will be a great addition to your repertoire of piano songs. Can't wait for another piano book by James B.

About the Author

Dr. Daniel T.H. Lai received his bachelor of electrical and computer systems engineering (Hons) and PhD in electrical and computer systems from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Melbourne and Victoria University (2007-2010). He is currently with the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science at Victoria University (2011). His research interests include computational intelligence and sensor network technology for healthcare and sports applications. This involves the design of new noninvasive and proactive sensing technologies capable of detecting, diagnosing, and predicting health risks. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and is a current reviewer for several international journals, including IEEE Transactions of Information Technology and Biomedicine, Journal of Biomechanics, and Sensors and Actuators. He is also actively involved in the organization of several workshops and international conferences.

Prof. Rezaul K. Begg received his BSc and MSc Eng degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, and his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Aberdeen, UK. Currently he is a Professor within the Biomechanics Unit at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. Previously, he worked with the University of Aberdeen, Deakin University, and BUET. His research interests are in biomedical engineering, gait biomechanics, and machine learning. He has published more than 160 research papers in these areas. He is on the editorial board for several international journals and regularly reviews submissions for more than 15 international journals. He has also been actively involved in organizing a number of major international conferences. He has received several awards for academic excellence, including the ICISIP 2005 Best Paper Award, the Vice Chancellor’s citation award for excellence in research at Victoria University, the BUET Gold Medal, and the Chancellor Prize.

Prof. Marimuthu Palaniswami received his bachelor of electrical engineering (Hons) from the University of Madras, ME, from the Indian Institute of Science, India; his MSc in engineering from the University of Melbourne; and PhD from the University of Newcastle, Australia, before rejoining the University of Melbourne. He has been serving the University of Melbourne for over 16 years. He has published more than 180 refereed papers. His research interests include support vector machines (SVMs), sensors and sensor networks, machine learning, neural networks, pattern recognition, signal processing, and control. He was given a Foreign Specialist Award by the Ministry of Education, Japan, in recognition of his contributions to the field of machine learning. He served as associate editor for journals/transactions including IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Applied Computational Intelligence for Finance and Economics. He is also the subject editor for International Journal on Distributed Sensor Networks.
