Semiotics is the scientific study of signs. In reading television, one must consider such factors as manifest and latent meanings, source, intended audiences, sponsorship, scheduling, genre, cast, plot, technical aspects, and myriad other variables that all have a bearing on the way a given program will potentially be interpreted by viewers. Reading television is complex. This book provides the terms and the overview of attributing meaning to television content.
One should not feel overwhelmed in attempting to understand television, however, as life itself has its own complexities. "Reality is itself a complex system of signs interpreted by members of the culture in exactly the same way as are film or television programmes," the authors write. Max Morenberg teaches linguistics and composition and directs the program in college composition at Miami University. He also co-directs the Ohio Writing Project and writes and conducts workshops and in-service presentations.

Anne Lobeck is Professor of English and Linguistics at Western Washington University. Her work includes articles on theoretical syntax and linguistics in education, and in addition to her two books with Kristin Denham she is author of Ellipsis: Functional Heads, Licensing and Identification (1995) and Discovering Grammar: An Introduction to English Sentence Structure (2000).

"backlash" is a phrase, *not* a word? nah.

I gave up on page 98, where the author claimed that "backlash" is a noun phrase *rather than* a single word.

First, the conclusion is wrong. "Backlash" is a legit lexical entry; you'll find it in a dictionary because it's not purely implied by the composition of "back" and 'lash". Second, the author gives four tests without noticing that every one of is true for NPs, yes, but also true for a single noun. Author's test: "Can 'backlash' be replaced by a pronoun, like other noun phrases?" But look: "Can 'back' be replaced by a pronoun?"

A noun with no article (a "zero determiner") can act as a noun phrase. This is uncontroversial in syntactic theories that use this type of noun phrase. This whole argument is bizarre to be having, and doesn't leave confidence in the book's treatment of syntax.

Very easy textbook rental and return process

This book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. It had a few pages where someone had written in a little not or highlighted a sentence, but other than that it looked pretty much brand new. After a week of taking the class that I needed this book for, I realized I didn't need to take the class and wanted to save my credits for other classes, so I dropped the course. Since Amazon has a 1-month return policy if you aren't pleased with the book or find out you don't need it anymore, I was able to return it back FOR FREE, since Amazon provides the return label for UPS. So the book was free saver shipping too when I bought it. Basically, I was extremely pleased with this whole process and transaction and will be using Amazon rentals again, for the ease of the process and that it's a lot cheaper than buying a new/used book that I have to worry about reselling.

God's Healing Grace

This book was given to me by a sweet friend when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She has told me to stay in the word and I would find the help and peace I need. I read these scriptures each night because it brings me peace, understanding and a closeness to God I never felt before. Even though my cancer has returned twice I never stop reading my book and my faith grows stronger. With this book, my family and my Sunday school class friends along with our strong Bible based church I can face each day with optimism and joy. I know my God is always with me and I have nothing to fear. But I know my strength comes not from me but it's God strength working through me to glorify Him. I only wish everyone could see how easy trusting Him is.

The Biblical truths in this little book are true and heal! I was healed of my broken heart and relieved of my emotional pain from abortions. Now, my sister has a book. And declaring God's Word, taught in the little book, has healed her from Alcoholism. Her husband is next...cancer.

Great idea, a bit of a disappointing execution

I really, really wanted to love this one. I think our country is in dire need of teaching our children civics and history. And I didn't find this book to be overtly political in one way or the other, it provided some decent background on concepts like elections and voting.

But like others, the main issue I have is with the style. Take the opening line of the book:
"Voting is something / we do every day / It's a way we can choose / that gives us our own say."

Compare it to the opening line of The Cat in the Hat:
"The sun did not shine. / It was too wet to play. / So we sat in the house, / All that cold, cold, wet day"

As another reviewer noted, just because the words rhyme doesn't mean it's Dr. Seuss poetry--not only is the rhyme and meter all wrong, but there's hardly any meter to speak of. Now granted, Dr. Seuss was a talent that comes once in a thousand years, but IMO derivative works like this based on his original characters only water down kids' perspectives of his original books' greatness. While I appreciate many of Bonnie Worth's other books (including some in this series), books like this are only inviting comparisons to the original, and they unfortunately fall far short. I wish that this new generation could create new ideas rather than constantly "reboot" old characters because they're sure money makers.

As far as the contents of the book, it's innocuous enough--I wish it could have done a little more to dispel the myth that a democratic republic is all only about "majority rule" but there's only so much you can say about that in a book for 5-8 year olds. I admittedly cringed a little around page 15-16 when it started to talk about political parties, mentioning the Democratic Party and Republican Party (and the Green Party and Libertarian Party in the index). Seriously, at that age can we let kids just be kids and not force them to start thinking about 'what side' they're on? I wish the contents of this book could have just stuck to the Constitution (which doesn't mention political parties at all).

So a nice effort, and otherwise a nice-looking book with appealing illustrations in the style of Dr. Seuss, but as a civics primer I'm not sure I'd use this. A much, much better option is Schoolhouse Rock!: Election Collection, which can easily work for the same age group and provides much more substance.

Used this as my all-school focus piece for our kindergarten to third grade election event. As other reviewers have said, the story is definitely not Dr. Seussish. Not well written with less-than-stellar rhyming.... That said, though, the book has been good to use because of the other activities associated with it. The associated website with the actual voting for kids to do has been wonderful! We created voting booths, "I had my say, I voted today" stickers and discussed issues/causes that even my youngest students could understand. Mention of, or discussion about, the two leading 2016 presidential candidates was never mentioned. We took the "high road" in election discussion.

I purchased this book to read to my 2nd grade class to go along with the upcoming election. It is packed full of great information at a child's level. It is written in a Dr. Seuss rhyming format that all young children love. Who is running for president in the book? Well..The Cat in the Hat, of course!

great book for bassists and luthiers

First, I am not a luthier, but somebody who owns a bass. My son plays it, so I am only really a guardian for the bass.
this book gives lots of information about how to repair a bass, and is also beneficial for initial setup. in the murky world of uprights, where only a few people truly understand the whole instrument, having access to this information is priceless for understanding what is going on with the instrument, what is wrong with it, and what might be done to fix it. it helps a bass owner to determine if a "repair shop" has a clue as to what to do.
the book does not list standard dimensions etc in an easily referenced manner, but the author basically says in several places that ever bass is different, every player is different, and the instrument has to be made to fit its needs. there are standard dimensions available elsewhere.
for the price, it is priceless. the next time you need to go for a setup, having this information will make you more effective at communicating your needs and getting your instrument fixed, or if you are a luthier, it will help you quickly understand what to do. the cost will be paid back the first time you use it!

I got this book as a bass player looking to get more out of my bass. As a bass player it informed me of the mechanics of the bass, how certain factors effect the sound/vibration, and simple solutions to get better performance from my bass.

Since then I have started to do some repair and setup work. This book has been an INVALUABLE resource. Chuck Traeger shares his tips, tricks, observations, and methodology that he has accumulated from the DECADES of experience he gained repairing thousands of basses. He lays out the process step-by-step often with helpful pictures.

Highly recommend this to anyone interested in the bass as a sound producing machine...

Lots of great advice and ideas for repair and tone improvements. Its a bit scattered to search through when you've got a specific problem - so I recommend using color tab page markers or something similar to help improve the organization. But a wealth of knowledge is here, and its a hefty book, which is reassuring considering the price.
