Can't Believe I Found It!!!

You should know that I have never read this book. This is my husband's "go to book" for a lot of his work. The EF-5 tornado that hit our hometown left his lab a pile of toothpicks. There are some things that you forget to put on your insurance claim and this was one of them. It took me three years to find this book in good shape and at a reasonable price (not $3K). The author has passed away and it is out of print. He looked into the 3rd edition, but found he would have to pay fees to get supplements online and it just wasn't as good as the Silver 2nd edition. Gold edition, no way, had to be the Silver. He has been in "the biz" for a few decades and has said that those that currently have the publishing rights should do another printing of what? The Silver 2nd edition. I gave it five stars by proxy.

unconventional but great

This book on pathology of inflammatory skin diseases is quite different than anything else in the field. Ackerman presents his own opinions boldly and interestingly. Have I had a book like this during my residency, I would have probably gotten more involved in this subject. At that time the book to read was Lever: the result was profound sleepiness and inability to finish a chapter. Here it is all different: each small chapter is thought provoking and original. Finally skin pathology became interesting!

detailed history

Kraft explains the history of the environmental policies of the US federal government, going up to late 2005. It is a detailed analysis, with copious footnotes pointing to original sources.

The narrative describes a constant tension between the US electorate wanting a cleaner environment and the unwillingness to accept higher taxes or other costs to achieve this. In some ways, it summarises aptly the various federal Acts, in how they were formulated, and the amount of enforcement that went into them.

Other tensions are shown to exist in such agencies as the Bureau for Land Management. Which has often tended towards allowing extensive resource use of its land, in contrast with the Forest Service. The book's characterisation of the BLM may be a little ironic. As it has come under constant criticism from ranchers and miners for what they see as overly restrictive policies.

Rosenbaum is clearer

If you're looking for a basic environmental policy book, this isn't bad. It's got good charts, etc. However, as far as clarity goes, the Rosenbaum book by the same (or a similar) title is better. It has fewer graphs and charts but makes the points better.

Informative but poorly written

If you don't need this book for a class I would recomend buying a different. Kraft is very informative but the book lacks any sentence flow. It is filled with overly wordy descriptions, and run on sentences. It feels as if Kraft has added in unnessary round about explanations to publish a 5th edition.

Karen Rudnick holds a B.S. in Organizational Behavior and a Masters Degree in Applied Management. Her professional emphasis is cross-cultural management. Rudnick was the Managing Director of Savoir Faire, Inc., Lexington, MA, a consulting firm specializing in multiple aspects and challenges of acculturation and international relocation for employees and their families. Rudnick is also a certified English as a Second Language instructor and has designed training programs for tutors of English speakers of other languages. She is a sought after speaker on cultural issues and cross-cultural management matters. Anne P. Copeland, Ph.D. is Director of The Interchange Institute, Brookline, MA., as well as an organizational consultant and a licensed clinical psychologist, specializing in individuals and families who move from one culture to another. Great resource for international students!

We provide this book for incoming international students at our university and they absolutely love it. The book covers housing, transportation, schools, healthcare, shopping and more. The short sections which go over things like the postal service are so beneficial for those who have never lived in the U.S.! I studied abroad and I remember how confusing a foreign post office can be. Explaining the little things like this makes transitioning to a new country and city, so helpful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone moving to the city of Boston from abroad. It is a great resource.

About the Author
Dr. Kent Olson is professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota. He is involved in applied research, on-campus teaching, and extension education. He has taught farm management for 25 years on campus and in extension settings. His research emphasizes farm level management issues, especially the interaction between farming and the environment, sustainable agriculture, decision-making, alternative production technologies, and the impact of government policies. Dr. Olson has also been the state coordinator for two farm record associations in Minnesota. He grew up on a farm in north-central Iowa, graduated from Iowa State University, and was a farm management extension specialist at the University of California-Davis before joining the faculty at Minnesota in 1985. He and his siblings continue to own and manage a farm in Iowa.

Expert Knowledge

I have known Tony for the better part of the past decade. He is an expert on data integration and the Oracle stack of products. I could not think of a better person to write this book. I am strongly recommending anyone who uses FDM to consider purchasing it.

A wonderful resource if you are upgrading from FDM Classic

If you're an FDMEE Administrator or consultant, this book is invaluable. Well written, with information you can use from day 1. A wonderful resource if you are upgrading from FDM Classic, too. I carry it on the road as a reference book. I'd give it six stars if there were such a thing. Thanks Tony for taking the time to share your knowledge.
